2012-13 Omaha Men’s Basketball – Game #30 – Postgame Notes, Facts, and Stats – South Dakota State

Scoring

  • Justin Simmons’ 29 points were the 2nd most of the season by a Maverick. He had 32 against Benedictine on December 18th. Simmons now has 8 of the top 10 scoring games for Omaha this season.
  • Omaha’s 82 points were their 7th most of the season.
  • This was the 15th time Omaha has lost this season when Justin Simmons reaches double figures. Omaha is 11-15 when he reaches double figures.
  • I had to double check this one, but this was the first time Matt Hagerbaumer has reached double figures in points.
  • This was the 2nd time in the last three games that Omaha had three players in double figures. They most recently did it against Chicago State.

Rebounding

  • This was the 35th time that Alex Welhouse had led the Mavericks in rebounding in his career. Omaha is 11-24 in those games.

Assists

  • John Karhoff has an assist in 19 straight games, the longest streak of his career.
  • Omaha’s 16 assists were tied for the 10th most of the season.

Steals

  • Justin Simmons’ three steals were tied for 4th most of the season by a Maverick and his first time with three+ since grabbing three at Kansas City on January 26th.
  • This marked the first time since the the South Dakota and Kansas City games on December 29th and December 31st that Omaha has had a player get three or more steals in consecutive games. Steffensmeier had four against North Dakota and Simmons with the three tonight.
  • Omaha’s eight steals were their 10th most of the season and most since having 12 steals at Kansas City on January 26th.

Blocks

  • Justin Simmons led the Mavericks in blocks for the 10th time, Omaha is 3-7 in those games.

Shooting

  • After failing to have any player hit 4 or more FTs in 5 straight games, the Mavericks have done it in 15 of the last 18 games.
  • Justin Simmons’ 12 FGs were tied for the most by a Maverick this season with his 12 vs. Benedictine.
  • Matt Hagerbaumer’s 5-5 shooting performance made him the first Maverick to hit all of his shots while hitting at least five FGs this season.
  • Alex Welhouse’s four 3FGs were tied for the 3rd most 3FGs by a Maverick this year and the first time he’s hit four since he do so at South Dakota on January 24th.
  • Alex Welhouse went 4-6 from three. That was tied for the 6th best 3FG% with at least two makes this season. Welhouse most recently shot 67% against North Dakota last Saturday when he went 2-3.
  • Omaha’s 32 FGs were tied for the 5th most of the season and most since Omaha hit 33 at IUPUI on February 9th.
  • Omaha’s eight 3FGs were tied for 6th most of the year and were the most since they hit 10 against Chicago State last week on February 19th.

Miscellaneous

  • Omaha has trailed in every game this year and trailed by 10 or more in 20 of the 30 games.
  • Omaha had 84 possessions in this game, the most in any game this season. The previous high was 83 on two occasions, most recently against North Dakota in their last game.
  • Omaha only turned it over on 10.8% of possessions, their 3rd best mark of the season and best since turning it over on 9.8% of possessions against Western Illinois on January 12th.
  • This was the 30th start of the year for both John Karhoff and Alex Welhouse. Omaha is 11-19 in those 30 games. Omaha is 10-15 in Alex Phillips’ 25 starts.
  • This was Alex Welhouse’s 70th career start. Omaha is 30-40 in those games.
  • This was the 35th time Omaha’s lost with CJ Carter starting. Omaha is 21-35 in his 56 career starts.
  • Omaha’s 27 point deficit in this game was their largest since trailing by 33 @ Western Illinois. That was also the last time Omaha didn’t lead at all in game.

Records Watch

  • Alex Welhouse’s 4-6 3FG shooting moved him up to 39.9% for his career. That moved him past Tyler Albers (39.5%) into 5th place all-time. If Welhouse went 0-4 on Saturday he would be tied with Albers in percentage. So unless Alex has a real bad game he should finish in 5th at worst. If he went 3-3 he still wouldn’t pass Denny Johnston for 4th. So most like Welhouse will end his career as Omaha’s 5th best 3FG% shooter.
  • John Karhoff made his 81st career start moving him past Mitch Albers (80 starts from 2007-09 and 2010-12) into 9th place.
  • Justin Simmons’ 12 FGs moved him into 10th place in FGs made in a season with 193. He passed Phil Cartwright (188 in 1989-90) and Mitch Albers (188 in 2011-12) in the process. 9th place is Tyler Bullock who had 199 in 2009-10.
  • Alex Welhouse’s 4-6 3FG shooting also moved his season percentage up to 42.9%. That’s the 10th best percentage for a season and moved him past Mike Harner who shot 42.7% in 1988-89. Welhouse could still fall behind him or he could move up past his own 9th place mark, 43.0% two years ago.
  • The 30 starts that John Karhoff and Alex Welhouse have made are tied for 10th most in a season by a Maverick. It seems low, but Omaha’s rarely played more than 30 games in a season. With starts on Saturday they will finish tied for 6th most in a season with Justin Petersen and Andrew Bridger in 2007-08 and Jeff Martin and Tyler Bullock in 2009-10.

  • Paige Frauendorfer’s six rebounds moved her past Sarah Larson into 7th place on the all-time rebounding chart. Larson had 671 from 1996-2000. Frauendorfer now has 676 in her career. The top six all have over 850 rebounds and all played before 1993. So Frauendorfer is the best rebounder at Omaha in the last 20 years.
  • Taijhe Kelly’s 4-6 shooting evening allowed her to improve her FG% on the year up to 50.43%. That’s 7th best in school history for players who have made at least 50 shots. She moved past Anne Bomstad who shot 50% in 2000-2001. Tanya Hammes is in 6th for he 2000-2001 season where she shot 50.44%.
  • Ericka House’s three 3FGs allowed her to pass Karen Thies on the single season 3FG chart. Thies made 54 in 2004-2005 and is now in 7th place. House’s 56 are tied for 5th with Heather Pohl who had 56 last year. Sara Peterson is in 4th with 60 in 2002-2003.
  • Taijhe Kelly now has 66 blocks on the season. That’s the 4th most in school history as she passed M. Henke Anderson’s senior season of 1982-1983 when she had 63. Kelly and Anderson are the only Mavericks to ever block more than 51 shots in a season. Anderson’s 67 blocks in her junior season of 1981-1982 is in 3rd place.
  • The six blocks also raised Taijhe Kelly’s season average to 2.54 blocks per game. That moved her past Anderson’s senior season (2.42 blocks per game) and past her sophomore season (2.53 blocks per game) into the best average in school history. If Kelly can block five shots in the next two games combined it will go down as the best average in school history.
  • Jamie Nash’s five steals gave her 84 on the season, tied for 8th most in school history with Sara Peterson had 84 in 2002-03. Nash passed Vicki Edmonds who had 83 in 1982-1983, Jamie’s own 2009-2010 season when she had 81, Linda Schabloske’s 81 in 1992-1993 and Kim Muma’s 81 in 1991-1992. Next up for Nash is Beth Wilkinson who had 86 in 1997-1998 and Sandy Skradski who had 86 in 1991-1992.
  • Omaha’s five 3FGs moved them past the 2009-2010 squad into 10th place in 3FGs made with 129. Omaha would need to hit 11 more to catch the 2000-2001 team.
  • Omaha’s 9-12 FT shooting moved their season FT% up to 72.36%. That moved them past the 2003-2004 season when they shot 72.28%. This year’s team is now in 7th place, just behind the 6th place team that shot 72.39%.
  • Omaha’s seven blocks gave them 96 on the year and moved them into 9th place on the all-time charts. Omaha passed the 2009-2010 team who had 92 and the 2001-2002 team who had 91.
