2012-13 Omaha Swimming and Diving – Retrospect

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks,Retrospects,Swimming and Diving — Jon Green @ 2:00 pm

Omaha can’t look back at this year as anything but a success. After a tough start against hard competition Omaha started the year 0-4 in duels before winning five of their last eight to finish the year at 5-7. They beat Division 1 opposition four times, Northern Iowa (twice), South Dakota State, and South Dakota. Omaha went to the Kansas Classic in November and finished 6th. They won the Grinnell Invite and came in 2nd to Northern Colorado in the Mutual of Omaha Invite.

In that Mutual of Omaha invite junior Maddie Hutt set school records in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke breaking records set by Ashley Renshaw back in 2006 and 2003 respectively.

To end the year at the Summit League Championship the Mavericks set three school records and came in 3rd behind Oakland and IUPUI. One of those records that fell was Jessica Hessel’s 100 freestyle record, broken by freshman Natalie Renshaw.

Omaha’s future looks bright. Of the eight spots on the two relay teams that set school records, four were swam by seniors, two by juniors, one by a sophomore, and one by a freshman.

The other three relay teams all were inside the top five in school history and the 12 spots included three seniors, five juniors, one sophomore, and three freshman.

Of the top individual times at the school this year from the 14 events just two were by seniors. So returning those leading the other 12 events is huge. Four were led by juniors, four by sophomores, and four by freshman.

Omaha’s divers were a sophomore and freshman, and both showed promise this year.

It’s a good start to the Summit League for UNO and somewhere to build from into the future.

2012-13 Omaha Swimming and Diving–Event #17 Recap–Summit League Championships – Friday and Saturday

Filed under: Recaps,Swimming and Diving,The Summit League — Jon Green @ 9:00 am

Friday Results
Saturday Results

Omaha ended the Summit League Championships with some strong performances and a 3rd place finish. The Mavericks just narrowly missed out on a 2nd place finish by 5.5 points, but it’s a good result for the Mavericks in their first year in the Summit League.

The Mavericks ended up with several good relay finishes. The 200 yard freestyle relay team that set the school record finished 2nd. The 200 yard medley relay team also set the school record and finished 3rd. Both the 800 yard freestyle relay team and the 400 yard freestyle relay team also finished 3rd.

Maddie Hutt was the only Maverick swimmer to finish 2nd in an individual event as she did so in the 100 yard breaststroke. Hutt also finished 3rd in the 200 yard breaststroke. Natalie Renshaw was the other Maverick swimmer to finish 3rd, in the 50 yard freestyle. Miranda Knipfer finished 3rd in the 1-meter diving competition.

The Mavericks will return a lot of strength. Hutt is a junior while Knipfer and Renshaw are only freshman. Omaha also got top five finishes by sophomore Lexi Bergeron and junior Erin Wright. Cami Hansberry was the only senior to finish in the top five. All five of the Mavericks top relay teams had at least two swimmers that weren’t seniors.

It’s important to remember that Omaha’s recruiting and swimmers are only starting to build up to D1 level. Omaha will be looking to get better every year as they are able to recruit stronger swimmers than in the D1 days. 15 Mavericks were underclassmen this year including many of the top swimmers.

It’ll be exciting to see how the program grows next year. Notice while looking at a lot of the events from the Summit League Championship that Omaha will have to break school records to reach the top times, so we could see a lot of those fall in the near future.

Here’s the final totals and the original projected standings. The only changes were IUPUI slipping by Omaha for 2nd and South Dakota State overtaking South Dakota for 4th.

2012-13 Omaha Swimming and Diving–Event #17 Recap–Summit League Championships – Wednesday

Filed under: Recaps,Swimming and Diving,The Summit League — Jon Green @ 9:39 pm

Wednesday Results

The first night of the Summit League Championships is in the books and Omaha has come up with two 3rd place finishes and one shiny new school record.

Omaha got the championship off to a solid start by setting a new school record in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Cami Hansberry, Maddie Hutt, Jenna Foiles, Anna Haxby broke the old record of 1:45.61 by over a full second with a time of 1:44.23.

Later in the 800 yard medley relay Omaha got 3rd again as the team of Whitney Korgan, Erin Wright, Natalie Renshaw, Mattea Fosbender swam a 7:37.06.

On Thursday Omaha will have two divers at 3 meters, two relay teams in the 200 yard freestyle, and twenty individual swimmers competing in three events. Swimming preliminaries will begin at 10 AM CT, diving preliminaries begin at 12 PM CT, and all of the finals begin at 5 PM CT.

Here’s the updated projections now that we know actual totals from Wednesday. No movement amongst the projected order of finish to this point.

Team Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Total
Oakland 80 313 384 357 1134
Omaha 64 124 216 141 545
IUPUI 68 89 141 154 452
South Dakota 54 123 148 120 445
South Dakota State 56 82 128 122 388
Eastern Illinois 58 36 60 65 219
Western Illinois 48 30 39 30 147

Here’s how Omaha did on Wednesday…
Wednesday:
200 Yard Medley Relay – 1:41.56/1:43.20/1:44.23 – School Record = 1:45.61
Projected Points: 32
3rd – 1:44.23 – Omaha ‘A’ – Cami Hansberry, Maddie Hutt, Jenna Foiles, Anna Haxby – NEW SCHOOL RECORD
11th– 1:52.09 – Omaha ‘B’ – Tasha Posthuma, Jordane Linhart, Katie Maier, Morgan Cullison

800 Yard Freestyle Relay – 7:24.35/7:32.98/7:37.06 – School Record = 7:31.21
Points: 32
3rd – 7:37.06 – Omaha ‘A’ – Whitney Korgan, Erin Wright, Natalie Renshaw, Mattea Fosbender
6th – 7:43.26 – Omaha ‘B’ – Ashley Kneifl, Hannah Johnson, Christen Young, Lexi Bergeron

And here’s who’s listed as competing on Thursday…

BTW – In individual events the top eight from the preliminaries will race for 1st through 8th in the evening while 9th through 16th will race for 9th through 16th. You can’t move up from the second group to the first so those preliminaries are very important and can’t just be breezed through for the top swimmers. Along with that 9th is worth two points less than 8th and 10th is a full four points less than 8th. Since 9th is often faster than 8th during the finals you can see just how much making the cut for the main final means.

2012-13 Omaha Swimming and Diving – Event #13 Recap – Grinnell Invitational – Saturday

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks,Recaps,Swimming and Diving — Jon Green @ 10:50 pm

Omaha finished the weekend strong on Saturday while extending their lead over Gustavus Adolphus en route to a win in the Grinnell Invitational. The Mavericks picked up their first multi-team meet win of the season, though they were the only D1 school taking part in this meet.  The final score was 1058 for Omaha with Gustavus Adolphus in 2nd with 1000. Omaha had a slew of winners and the encouraging sign is how many of these swimmers are underclassmen!

Maddie Hutt and Whitney Korgan are juniors. Anna Haxby, Chelsea Hartman, Mattea Fosbender and Cami Hansberry are seniors.  Other than that everyone below is sophomores or freshman. All three of Omaha’s individual event winners today were sophomores. It’s a young team that is getting better and will only improve over the coming years.

Saturday Omaha winners: (5)

2012-13 Omaha Swimming and Diving – Event #13 Recap – Grinnell Invitational – Friday Finals

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks,Recaps,Swimming and Diving — Jon Green @ 10:35 am

Omaha finished their Friday strong at the Grinnell Invitational, ending the day with a 550-518 lead over Gustavus Adolphus. 3rd place Luther College is well off the pace so as expected it’s coming down to the Mavericks and the Gusties. Here’s the page with the evening results. If you’re looking for my recap of Friday’s preliminaries you can find them here.

The way these finals work is that 1-10 from the preliminaries are in Final A and swimming for spots 1-10, 11-20 from the preliminaries are in Final B and swimming for spots 11-20 (even if they are faster than someone in Final A). Final C is just for decoration… though perhaps if someone in Final B got DQ’d perhaps they could move up and get a point?

I’ll show how all the Mavericks fared and keep track of the point totals for Omaha and Gustavus Adolphus, along with our projected scores from before the meet.

Last weekend Omaha’s swimming and diving team preformed admirably on Friday against Northern Iowa picking up a big win before Illinois State beat them in Normal on Saturday. This weekend Omaha will be in the Grinnell Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa.

There will be eleven schools competing in the invitational. Last year Omaha finished 2nd to Gustavus Adolphus and will look to improve on that this year.
The event schedule is available online. There will be 10 events each day, seven preliminaries in the morning starting at 9 am followed by one final. Then diving at approximately 1 pm, then the evening session at 5:30pm which will have eight finals.

I’ve used results from previous meets this year to try and project things and give us an idea of what to expect. Here are the schools and what meet I used to project them:

  • Omaha – Division 1 – Mutual of Omaha Invite
  • Nebraska-Kearney – Division 2 – Mutual of Omaha Invite
  • Augustana College – Division 3 – Pioneer Classic
  • Coe College – Division 3 – Pioneer Classic
  • Grinnell College – Division 3 – Pioneer Classic
  • Gustavus Adolphus – Division 3 – Jean Freeman Invitational

  • Macalester College – Division 3 – St. Thomas Invitational
  • Simpson College – Division 3 – Mutual of Omaha Invite
  • St. Catherine – Division 3 – St. Thomas Invitational
  • College of Saint Mary – NAIA – Mutual of Omaha Invite

For each event you’ll find the following information:
Event Name – 1st/2nd/3rd from last year – Omaha School Record
Top 5 times from my research
All of Omaha’s times from the Mutual of Omaha Invite
Projected scores for Gustavus and Omaha. They are likely go 1-2 so we won’t worry about the others really.
If Omaha had a top 5 swimmer last year in the event

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks,Recaps,Swimming and Diving — Jon Green @ 12:45 pm

Omaha was overmatched in a swimming dual meet on Saturday against Illinois State. Illinois state won 12 of the 16 events and went 1-2-3 in six different events as they ran away with the dual meet. Omaha did find more success in the form of freshman Natalie Renshaw who won the 50 Yard Backstroke and the 50 Yard Freestyle races. Renshaw is quite the talent with lots of time to grow for Omaha. Maddie Hutt won the 100 Yard Breaststroke while the relay team of Whitney Korgan, Hannah Johnson, Natalie Renshaw, and Anna Haxby won the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.

      None

So a tough one for Omaha but good to see Renshaw shining in a tough matchup. I had projected 231-67 Illinois State before hand and it seems that was fairly accurate. Definitely not a dual meet Omaha was ever going to contend for.

      Next Scheduled Meet:
Omaha will next swim in the Grinnell Invite on Friday and Saturday. The Mavericks came in 2nd in the Invite last year behind Gustavus Adolphus College.

2012-13 Omaha Swimming and Diving – Event #12 Preview – Illinois State

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks,Previews,Swimming and Diving — Jon Green @ 10:00 am

Omaha got a big 174-124 win at Northern Iowa on Friday night and now they’ll look to get a 2nd win this weekend with another dual meet on Saturday at Illinois State (2 PM). The Redbirds are in the Missouri Valley Conference and have beaten teams such as Illinois, Truman State, Evansville, and Northern Iowa (182-110) this year. Their last event was the Copa Coqui Swim Invitational in Puerto Rico last Saturday where they finished 5th.

Omaha and Illinois State met last year in October in HPER and the Redbirds were 177.5-122.5 victors. Last year Omaha lost 176.5-119.5 @ Northern Iowa so they may fare a lot better this season if they were to make up a similar amount of ground as they did against Northern Iowa.  I’ll provide my projections and projected winners/runner-ups for Omaha based on Omaha’s times from the meet last night and Illinois State’s from their dual meet with Illinois.

50 Yard Freestyle – Projected Illinois State 15-4
100 Yard Freestyle – Projected Illinois State 16-3
200 Yard Freestyle – Projected Illinois State 16-3
500 Yard Freestyle – Projected Illinois State 16-3
1000 Yard Freestyle – Projected Illinois State 16-3
100 Yard Butterfly – Projected Illinois State 13-6
200 Yard Butterfly – Projected Illinois State 13-6
      100 Yard Backstroke – Projected Omaha 10-9
      200 Yard Backstroke – Projected Omaha 10-9
100 Yard Breaststroke – Projected Illinois State 16-3
200 Yard Breaststroke – Projected Illinois State 16-3
200 Yard IM – Projected Illinois State 16-3
200 Yard Freestyle Relay – Projected Illinois State 13-4
200 Yard Medley Relay – Projected Illinois State 15-2
1 Meter Diving – Projected Illinois State 16-2
3 Meter Diving – Projected Illinois State 16-2

      Projected Omaha winners:
Natalie Renshaw – 100 Yard Backstroke, 200 Yard Backstroke

      Projected Omaha runner-ups:
Christen Young – 200 Yard Butterfly

Well those projections aren’t pretty for Omaha giving them a 231-67 loss and seven events where Illinois State goes 1-2-3 along with a 1-2 in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Omaha’s best chance to win seems to the 100 and 200 yard backstroke where freshman Natalie Renshaw has been superb.
I’m interested to see if this projection is remotely close to what happens because the numbers behind this showed some big gaps in time in most of those 16-3 events.

2012-13 Omaha Swimming and Diving – Event #11 Recap – Northern Iowa

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks,Recaps,Swimming and Diving — Jon Green @ 4:00 am

Omaha hadn’t been in a competitive swim in over a month but showed no signs of rust while cruising to a 174-124 win at Northern Iowa. The Mavericks have now won four straight meets against other schools, beating South Dakota State, South Dakota and Northern Iowa (twice) in the process. Omaha has another matchup tomorrow against Illinois State in Normal at 2 PM!  Pretty quick turnaround but it’s only a 3 hour drive between Northern Iowa and Illinois State.

Complete results are available here. Here’s what I learned from this one…

      1) Collegeswimming.com doesn’t really have good numbers. It’s not that they are inaccurate it’s just that they don’t have a ton of data. For example it looks like they have data from only three Omaha meets this year. Not going to provide a very accurate picture of the team that way.
      2) Omavs.com doesn’t have any kind of season bests available either. I’m not surprised; there really isn’t much interest in swimming and diving so it’s not like there’s a lot of demand for that kind of information to be easily available to the media.
      3) Without any accurate idea what the season has been like for swimmers… it’s hard to say much other than whether they won the event or not. So for this recap (and tomorrow’s) I will be limited to recapping the events in order and showing the score as the meet went on. I hope to compile a list of Omaha’s times from this year during the week before the Grinnell Invite (next Friday and Saturday) so that more context can be provided to help in the future.

Illinois State tomorrow at 2 PM. They beat Northern Iowa 182-110 back in November, so this might be a really good matchup. Illinois State competed in the Copa Coqui Swim Invitational in Puerto Rico on January 5th so they aren’t coming off a huge layoff. I’ll take what I’ve learned from tonight and try to provide a better preview for that one!

2012-13 Omaha Swimming and Diving – Event #11 Preview – Northern Iowa

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks,Previews,Swimming and Diving — Jon Green @ 6:00 pm

Omaha hasn’t been in a swimming competition since a 166-122 win over South Dakota State on 12/8, but they get back in the pool Friday night in Cedar Falls, Iowa against Northern Iowa. Omaha already beat Northern Iowa 149-145 in a home meet earlier this year. Last year Omaha lost in Cedar Falls 176.5-119.5.

Here’s the top times for each team this year in the various events (taken from collegeswimming.com) along with the points they picked up in Omaha. I am still trying to figure out how these things work. That 149-145 Omaha win against Northern Iowa featured 49 points that Northern Iowa won in the final three swimming events uncontested. Do teams just typically enter their swimmers as exhibition swimmers once they are up so far they can’t lose? It doesn’t seem to happen in every meet. I haven’t found any info on these things, so if anyone knows more please let me know!
