2012-13 Summit League Women’s Basketball–Final Awards Preview

Filed under: The Summit League,Women's Basketball — Jon Green @ 12:00 pm

The awards should be announced in the next couple days, and here’s a look at how I voted (more or less). I looked at things pretty statistically since I didn’t get to see many of the players more than once or twice.

First Team All-Summit League
Amanda Hyde – Fort Wayne – 18.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.9 spg, 47% FG%, 42% 3FG%, 88% FT%
Danielle DeGange – North Dakota State – 15.4 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.2 spg, 80% FT%
Megan Waytashek – South Dakota State – 15.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.3 apg, 54% FG%, 51% 3FG%, 84% FT%
Paige Frauendorfer – Omaha – 15.7 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.8 spg, 88% FT%
Ashley Luke – Western Illinois – 12.9 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.5 spg, 50% FG%
Eilise O’Connor – Kansas City – 18.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.6 spg, 93% FT%

Think this list is pretty close to what we’ll see. The first five are easy. O’Connor is probably the 6th member. Luke’s been amazing over the last few weeks really shooting up my ranks.

Second Team All-Summit League
Katie Birkel – North Dakota State – 15.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.4 apg
Elena Popkey – Oakland – 12.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.5 spg, 47% 3FG%
Kerah Nelson – IUPUI – 11.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 49% FG%
Carolyn Blair-Mobley – Omaha – 11.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.6 spg
Tempestt Wilson – South Dakota – 15.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 46% FG%, 38% 3FG%, 81% FT%

This group is pretty tightly bunched as my next group… it’s a pretty deep 2nd tier.

Honorable Mention All-Summit League
Rebecca Henricson – Western Illinois – 5.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.1 apg, 2.2 spg, 45% FG%, 38% 3FG%
Polly Harrington – South Dakota – 10.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.0 bpg, 49% FG%, 40% 3 FG%
Ashley Eide – South Dakota State – 12.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.1 apg
Erin Murphy – Fort Wayne – 14.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 45% FG%
Gabrielle Boever – South Dakota State – 7.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.4 spg, 45% FG%

Henricson and Harrington are really close to second team for me. Henricson doesn’t do much wrong on the court and contributes in a number of ways even if she doesn’t score much. Just off this team was Margaret McCloud, Nicole Seekamp, and Victoria Lipscomb. Also Jamie Nash who is hurt by having pretty rough conference-only statistics.

All-Newcomer Team
Ashley Luke – Western Illinois – 12.9 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.5 spg, 50% FG%
Elena Popkey – Oakland – 12.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.5 spg, 47% 3FG%
Carolyn Blair-Mobley – Omaha – 11.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.6 spg
Polly Harrington – South Dakota – 10.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.0 bpg, 49% FG%, 40% 3 FG%
Margaret McCloud – South Dakota – 7.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 64% FG%

Three of the five on this team are first or second team all-Summit as well. Strong group.

Player of the Year
Amanda Hyde – Fort Wayne – 18.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.9 spg, 47% FG%, 42% 3FG%, 88% FT%

Hyde seems to be the one to me. DeGagne made a strong run late in the year at her but Hyde’s body of work better for me.

Defensive Player of the Year
Victoria Lipscomb – Oakland – 7.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.1 apg, 2.1 spg, 1.1 bpg

Taijhe Kelly made a late push for this one with her blocks down the stretch but I went with Lipscomb. 6th in defensive rebounds, 5th in steals, 4th in blocks. Strong all around defender for Oakland.

Newcomer of the Year

Ashley Luke – Western Illinois – 12.9 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.5 spg, 50% FG%

With her strong finish this one seems pretty easy.

Coach of the Year
Chance Lindley – Omaha – 7-9

Omaha was picked to be real far back in last. Instead they won seven games and weren’t far from being over .500. There were several candidates up there for me… Chris Paul of Fort Wayne, Amy Williams of South Dakota, and Shann Hart of IUPUI were all really strong this year leading their teams to top four finishes.

6th Woman of the Year
Margaret McCloud – South Dakota – 7.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 64% FG%

Saw it in person in their final game, she’s a handful and a great presence off the bench.
