2012-13 Summit League Basketball Power Rankings – March 6th

Men’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 22-9 (13-3) – Last Week: 1
Games last week: W @ Omaha
First round matchup: IUPUI

Clearly the conference title favorite to me… but what that doesn’t mean is that I think they are better than 50-50 to win it. While I like them more than anyone with so many strong teams near the top it’s really up in the air still.

WIU2.) Western Illinois – 21-7 (13-3) – Last Week: 2
Games last week: W vs. Kansas City,  vs. South Dakota
First round matchup: South Dakota

No Terell Parks last weekend but they escaped with two close wins. Can’t seem them threatening in Sioux Falls unless they get Parks back and playing well. Tough break if they don’t and can’t play at full strength.

NDST3.) North Dakota State – 22-8 (12-4) – Last Week: 4
Games last week: W @ Omaha
First round matchup: Kansas City

They look really good with Taylor Braun back and if Parks isn’t back for Western Illinois I imagine they’ll make the final to face South Dakota State in what would be a great battle.

OAK4.) Oakland – 16-15 (10-6) – Last Week: 3
Games last week: L vs. Fort Wayne
First round matchup: Fort Wayne

Well those first two matchups didn’t really matter in the end… this is the one that counts and Oakland will be fine as long as they win this one. Considering they lost by just two on Saturday despite Travis Bader going 1-11 from three, they’ll feel good about their chances if he is shooting well. He is 3-21 from three this year against Fort Wayne.

IPFW5.) Fort Wayne – 15-16 (7-9) – Last Week: 5
Games last week: W @ Oakland
First round matchup: Oakland

Hard to beat a team three times in three weeks but that is what Fort Wayne will have to do to get out of the first round of the tournament. They are a wildcard in Sioux Falls, really have improved over the last few weeks winning their final four conference games, three of those on the road. They haven’t lost by more than seven since the 26 point loss at South Dakota State on January 12th.

NEBO6.) Omaha – 11-20 (6-10) – Last Week: 6
Games last week: L vs. South Dakota State, L vs. North Dakota State
Season Over

Okay so that last weekend wasn’t very fun but they finish 6th in the standings and only lost once to the teams below them, clear #6 to me though their upside probably isn’t as high as South Dakota.

UMKC7.) Kansas City – 8-23 (5-11) – Last Week: 7
Games last week: L @ Western Illinois, W @ IUPUI
First round matchup: North Dakota State

While it’s easy to write Kansas City off heading into this game it is noteworthy that they have been better over the last month. Losses at Western Illinois by three, at Tennessee Tech by six, to Oakland by 12, and to Fort Wayne by five. Not a great stretch by any means but they weren’t getting blown out by 20 points per game either. They did lose by 19 and 37 to North Dakota State though this year… it probably won’t be close.

SDAK8.) South Dakota – 10-19 (5-11) – Last Week: 8
Games last week: W @ IUPUI, L @ Western Illinois
First round matchup: Western Illinois

Thought about moving them up to #7 since they probably have a better shot at winning their first round matchup, but no. South Dakota has been close recently losing by one to Oakland and two to Western Illinois, but as you see above with Kansas City they’ve had some close ones too. South Dakota was swept by Kansas City and while they have a couple good wins I’ll let that decide things for now.

IUPUI9.) IUPUI – 6-25 (1-15) – Last Week: 9
Games last week: L vs. South Dakota, L vs. Kansas City
First round matchup: South Dakota State

Unless it’s the upset for the ages a team that was 6-10 and 1-2 in the Summit after beating Fort Wayne by 14 on January 27th is going to finish on a 16 game losing streak Sad smile.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Trevor Gruis
had quite the weekend. A total of 45 points, 15 rebounds, five assists on 16-22 shooting (73%) and 13-14 from the FT line (93%). The 26 at IUPUI was a career high.

Women’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 22-7 (14-2) – Last Week: 1
Games last week: W @ North Dakota State
First round matchup: Oakland

The only team I really see challenging them is IUPUI, but I’d have them at a 75% chance at least of winning the tournament.

IUPUI2.) IUPUI – 19-10 (12-4) – Last Week: 2
Games last week: W vs. Oakland, W vs. Fort Wayne
First round matchup: Kansas City

While I think IUPUI is a good threat to South Dakota State, I’m not even sure they can get by South Dakota. That semifinal would be very interesting.

SDAK3.) South Dakota – 15-14 (10-6) – Last Week: 4
Games last week: W @ Omaha
First round matchup: North Dakota State

Did drop a home game to North Dakota State down the stretch but have to favor them in this one… they have a real shot at making the final which make for a cool SDSU-USD battle on Tuesday afternoon in Sioux Falls.

IPFW4.) Fort Wayne – 12-16 (8-8) – Last Week: 3
Games last week: L @ Western Illinois, L @ IUPUI
First round matchup: Western Illinois

Not a good weekend, though with South Dakota’s win it did not matter for seeding purposes. Still they weren’t competitive over the weekend after a nice four game winning streak. Think they can beat Western Illinois still but hard to see them seriously challenging South Dakota State. Of course if Amanda Hyde gets hot… who knows.

WIU5.) Western Illinois – 14-15 (7-9) – Last Week: 7
Games last week: W vs. Fort Wayne, W vs. Oakland
First round matchup: Fort Wayne

With a solid home weekend they earned the five seed and might have been overlooked lately. They haven’t lost by more than nine points since the 35 point loss at South Dakota State on January 17th… definitely a team who can beat Fort Wayne on Sunday but SDSU on Monday is probably too much.

NEBO6.) Omaha – 17-11 (7-9) – Last Week: 5
Games last week: L vs. South Dakota, W vs. Kansas City
Season Over

5th or 6th are both places I could see them ranked. Didn’t look good against South Dakota but showed against Kansas City why they were a threat to do a lot better. Losses to South Dakota State by 13 and 10, to IUPUI by 11 and 2, to South Dakota by 11 and 5, to Fort Wayne by 5. Omaha was competitive in all of those games and really had a chance to win all of them except for the South Dakota State games. If they’d flipped a few more of those they could have been over .500. One more stat for you: In conference the average margin of victory was 13.3, 11 if you remove the 27 point win over Kansas City. Average margin of defeat was 9.4… and that drops to 7.3 if you remove the 27 point loss at Western Illinois. Omaha was generally closer to winning (four losses by five or less) than to losing (one win by five point or less).

NDST7.) North Dakota State – 10-18 (6-10) – Last Week: 6
Games last week: L vs. South Dakota State
First round matchup: South Dakota

There’s a lot of heat up in Fargo these days towards the women’s program. An upset over South Dakota would go a long way to making people and they did split the season series… You could even see them take down IUPUI who they beat earlier in the year as well. Offense has been clicking over the last couple games and they are well rested having played just twice since the 16th of February (though is that a good thing?).

UMKC8.) Kansas City – 9-20 (5-11) – Last Week: 8
Games last week: L @ Omaha
First round matchup: IUPUI

They just seem to be playing out the season at this point… pretty poor at Omaha. IUPUI should have no troubles with a team they dominated a couple weeks ago.

OAK9.) Oakland – 9-19 (3-13) – Last Week: 9
Games this week: L @ IUPUI, L @ Western Illinois
First round matchup: South Dakota State

Oakland didn’t show any signs they could beat South Dakota State during the regular season… so this will probably end on Saturday. Interesting to note that their three wins include games vs. South Dakota and IUPUI…

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Kerah Nelson
went for a career high 29 in the win over Fort Wayne on 13-14 shooting. For the weekend she had 37 points on 15-22 shooting (68%), was 7-7 on FTs, and had 19 rebounds. Strong weekend for her.

Do you all agree with the rankings at all?  Think I’m way off on some teams? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
