2012-13 Summit League Basketball Power Rankings – February 27th

Men’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 21-9 (12-3) – Last Week: 1
Potential Range of Finishes – 1st through 2nd

Games last week: L @ Cal State Bakersfield, L @ Murray State
Games this week: @ Omaha

It was not a good week for the Jackrabbits who didn’t have kind of at-large resume anyways but now will be seeded slightly lower if they do make the tournament. For now the focus is back on the regular season title as they can win it with a victory at Omaha on Thursday.

WIU2.) Western Illinois – 19-7 (11-3) – Last Week: 2
Potential Range of Finishes – 1st through 4th
Games last week: L vs. Cleveland State
Games this week: vs. Kansas City, vs. South Dakota

Western Illinois had probably the most disappointing of all the BracketBusters losses in the Summit League. At least South Dakota State and North Dakota State were on the road. Western Illinois was at home in a matchup that looked pretty good for them. Need to rebound this weekend to get back on the right track heading into Sioux Falls. Terell Parks is no lock to go this weekend with his ankle injury and a good case for resting him can be made.

OAK3.) Oakland – 16-14 (10-5) – Last Week: 3
Potential Range of Finishes – 3rd through 4th

Games last week: L @ Fort Wayne, W vs. Morehead State
Games this week: Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne pulled the upset over Oakland last week and now they have to face them again. I imagine Oakland will get some revenge in that one. Made people nervous on Saturday against Morehead State but did pull it out. I think the fact that they’ll have to face Fort Wayne again in Sioux Falls unless they get some help is a bigger problem than potentially facing South Dakota State in the semifinals. Both semifinals will be very tough but Fort Wayne looks by far the toughest first round opponent.

NDST4.) North Dakota State – 21-8 (11-4) – Last Week: 4
Potential Range of Finishes – 2nd through 4th

Games last week: L @ Akron, W vs. Utah Valley
Games this week: @ Omaha

Wasn’t expected to upset Akron but did keep it interesting for a while. A 12-4 finish and avoiding Fort Wayne in the first round and South Dakota State in the semifinals would feel like a real success after missing Braun for so long. Why are they still #4 despite Oakland losing another Summit League game? Well I’m just not totally sure North Dakota State can get to full speed for the conference tournament. They didn’t look great tonight vs. a Utah Valley team that’s not all that great. I think Omaha will challenge them on Saturday which how well the Mavericks are playing.

IPFW5.) Fort Wayne – 14-16 (6-9) – Last Week: 6
Potential Range of Finishes – 5th through 7th
Games last week: W vs. Oakland, W vs. Bowling Green
Games this week: @ Oakland

They are red hot now and have a chance to put some real pressure on Oakland if they could beat them a 2nd time and lockup the rematch in Sioux Falls. I moved them ahead of Omaha because they have that top four upset that the Mavericks don’t and because Fort Wayne will finish ahead of Omaha unless the Mavericks upset North Dakota State or South Dakota State. Also remember Fort Wayne’s loss at Omaha came without Mario Hines.

NEBO6.) Omaha – 11-18 (6-8) – Last Week: 5
Potential Range of Finishes – 5th through 7th

Games last week: W North Dakota
Games this week: vs. South Dakota State, vs. North Dakota State

Solid win in the BracketBusters over North Dakota. Think everyone has been pretty impressed with Omaha’s quick growth into the Summit League. Will need an upset this upcoming weekend to keep a shot at 5th alive but 6th would be a plenty good finish as well. They can lock that up on Thursday night if Kansas City doesn’t upset Western Illinois.

UMKC7.) Kansas City – 7-22 (4-10) – Last Week: 7
Potential Range of Finishes – 6th through 8th

Games last week: L @ Tennessee Tech
Games this week: @ Western Illinois, @ IUPUI

Well… I feel like these bottom three are so far removed from the teams above them. Kansas City’s been pretty bad over the last… well… the entire year basically. Since December 5th they have just three wins. A sweep of South Dakota and a win at Fort Wayne. Have a really good shot at getting one more at IUPUI to end the year. Probably will be the 6th seed in Sioux Falls unless South Dakota has a great weekend.

SDAK8.) South Dakota – 9-18 (4-10) – Last Week: 8
Potential Range of Finishes – 6th through 8th
Games last week: W @ Montana State
Games this week: @ IUPUI, @ Western Illinois

Perhaps the nice out of conference win will reignite this team. They should get a 2nd straight win at IUPUI and could move up to the 6th seed if they beat Western Illinois to end the year. I know it sounds crazy but that game was close in South Dakota (73-71 Western Illinois) and if Parks doesn’t play… who knows.

IUPUI9.) IUPUI – 6-23 (1-13) – Last Week: 9
Potential Range of Finishes – 9th
Games last week: L vs. Milwaukee
Games this week: vs. South Dakota, vs. Kansas City

Well that was the chance… wish they’d grabbed it. Still could beat South Dakota or Kansas City of course before being a sacrificial lamb in Sioux Falls.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Thinking of changing this to “Nate Wolters’ Week:”. I know his team didn’t win but making this about whose team went 2-0 hasn’t been the M.O. here for quite a while. Wolters scored 32 points, had 10 rebounds, and had nine assists at Cal State Bakersfield before “only” scoring 18 with two rebounds and five assists at Murray State. Went 18-30 from the field for the week.

Game of the ‘Next’ Week:
Well the only really good matchup is Fort Wayne @ Oakland so it’s game of the week again. Doesn’t have as many seeding implications this week since last week’s took care of most of those.

Women’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 21-7 (13-2) – Last Week: 1
Potential Range of Finishes – 1st

Games last week: W vs. Omaha
Games this week: @ North Dakota State

With the regular season title secure they are ready to focus on Sioux Falls. Wouldn’t advise overlooking the Bison though who would love the upset and any blemishes will hurt potential NCAA seeding.

IUPUI2.) IUPUI – 17-10 (10-4) – Last Week: 2
Potential Range of Finishes – 2nd through 3rd

Games last week: L @ South Dakota, W @ Kansas City
Games this week: vs. Oakland, vs. Fort Wayne

South Dakota continues to be a thorn in their side but the win at Kansas City means they’ll be in that 2/3 semifinal should they win their first round matchup. I’ve half joked that they should lose to Fort Wayne on purpose if it means moving the Mastodons into the 3rd seed and avoiding South Dakota in Sioux Falls. If South Dakota loses to Omaha on Thursday and Fort Wayne wins at Western Illinois they would really be looking at that scenario.

IPFW3.) Fort Wayne – 12-14 (8-6) – Last Week: 3
Potential Range of Finishes – 3rd through 4th

Games last week: W @ Oakland
Games this week: @ Western Illinois, @ IUPUI

A nice win over Oakland and now they head on the road to try and avoid a potential semifinal matchup with South Dakota State. Would like some help from Omaha though.

SDAK4.) South Dakota – 14-14 (9-6) – Last Week: 4
Potential Range of Finishes – 2nd through 4th

Games last week: W vs. IUPUI, W vs. Western Illinois
Games this week: @ Omaha

Well… they’re a good team when they play IUPUI. I’m not really sure how to read this team but if they win at Omaha and Fort Wayne loses at IUPUI I’ll move them back to #3.

NEBO5.) Omaha – 16-10 (6-8) – Last Week: 5
Potential Range of Finishes – 5th through 8th

Games last week: L @ South Dakota State, L @ North Dakota State
Games this week: vs. South Dakota, vs. Kansas City

A disappointing loss to North Dakota State on Saturday night when they really could have pulled off the win. Home sweep to end things would get them to .500 in conference. A couple of losses could leave this season feeling pretty bad at 6-10 and potentially falling behind everyone but Oakland.

NDST6.) North Dakota State – 10-17 (6-9) – Last Week: 8
Potential Range of Finishes – 5th through 8th

Games last week: W vs. Omaha
Games this week: vs. South Dakota State

Well they did get a nice home win over Omaha and while they look like they’ll finish 6-10 it’s possibly good enough to get the #5 seed. Most of their seeding is out of their hands now unless they can pull the major upset.

WIU7.) Western Illinois – 12-15 (5-9) – Last Week: 7
Potential Range of Finishes – 5th through 9th

Games last week: W @ Kansas City, L @ South Dakota
Games this week: vs. Fort Wayne, vs. Oakland

Playing better and better it seems. Win over Kansas City gave them a nice boost and now they could get to the #5 seed. Assuming they beat Oakland the game against Fort Wayne could get them to 7-9 and that #5 seed and a probable rematch with Fort Wayne in Sioux Falls. A loss to Fort Wayne and they could actually be facing Oakland on Saturday with the loser finishing in last.

UMKC6.) Kansas City – 9-19 (5-10) – Last Week: 6
Potential Range of Finishes – 6th through 9th
Games last week: L vs. Western Illinois, L vs. IUPUI
Games this week: @ Omaha

Poor play over the weekend as they put up just 71 points in the two games combined. Team has gone back downhill quickly. I don’t think they’ll upset Omaha so they’d be sitting at 5-11. Probably not going to be falling behind Oakland still but 8th place looks likely.

OAK9.) Oakland – 9-17 (3-11) – Last Week: 9
Potential Range of Finishes – 7th through 9th

Games last week: L vs. Fort Wayne
Games this week: @ IUPUI, @ Western Illinois

While it seems likely they’ll still be in 9th if they could pull off the upset at IUPUI on Thursday the game at Western Illinois on Saturday could be very interesting.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Ashley Luke made this one pretty easy… 20 points and 11 rebounds at Kansas City followed by 16 points and 10 rebounds at South Dakota. She went 14-25 from the field this weekend and 8-9 from the FT line. She had a combined three assists, three steals, and five blocks. Luke has been really playing well lately.

Game of the ‘Next’ Week:
Fort Wayne at IUPUI on Saturday could be a preview of the #2/#3 matchup in Sioux Falls!
