2012-13 Omaha Track and Field – Event #9 Recap – Summit League Indoor Championships – Monday

Monday Results
The Mavericks didn’t set a bunch of personal bests on Monday at the Summit League Championship. Denneil Shaw and Jessica Ripp both did so in the triple jump while Kathie-Lee Laidley in the high jump, Maja Mihalinec in the 200m, and the 4x400m relay team of Terri Armstrong, Lauren Psota, Katarina Zarudnaya, Sami Spenner all set season bests.

No the real success of Omaha’s track team on Monday was how they did in direct competition with their Summit League peers. Sami Spenner won her 3rd individual event of the Championships in the triple jump with a jump of 12.43m. Teammate Maja Mihalinec added Omaha’s fourth individual title in the 60m dash with a time of 7.58.

Omaha went 1-2 in the triple jump as Denneil Shaw ended up in 2nd with a 11.76m jump. Mihalinec added a second in the 200m with a time of 24.42 to go with her 60m dash win. Kathie-Lee Laidley finished in a tie for 2nd in the high jump after clearing 1.73m. Finally the aforementioned 4x400m relay team came in 2nd after their fantastic time of 3:52.20.

Omaha had two 3rd place finishers, Amanda Vorthmann in the mile with a time of 5:03.04 and Katarina Zarudnaya with a 2:20.66 800 meter race.

Spenner added two fourth place finishes, one in the high jump after clearing 1.68m and one in the 60m hurdles for her 8.69. She ended up with four top five finishes on Monday to go along with the two on Sunday. A fantastic three championships, one runner-up, and two fourths for her this weekend.

Overall Omaha captured four individual titles, five second places, two third place finishes and a grand total of 15 top five finishes. This led Omaha to finish 2nd after narrowly beating out South Dakota 118-114. North Dakota State ran away with the title as expected with 186 points. They’ll be a tough team to top for Omaha in the next couple years.

Omavs.com is reporting that Amanda Vorthmann was battling flu-like symptoms this weekend. A tough break for the great runner who did get a 3rd but was not at her best. Hopefully she can give a strong finish to her career in the outdoor season and perhaps win an individual title in the Summit League Championships.

Here’s the final team standings. Omaha will be really happy with 2nd place.
1 – 186 – North Dakota State
2 – 118 – Omaha
3 – 114 – South Dakota
4 – 86 – Kansas City
5 – 73 – South Dakota State

Next Scheduled Meet:
Omaha’s not eligible for the NCAA Championships so they won’t be taking place in any qualifiers or NCAA Championship events over the next few weeks. That gives the team a few weeks without competition until they head to the Tulsa Duals down in Oklahoma on Saturday, March 16th. Omaha will compete in 10 events this spring before heading to the Summit League Outdoor Championship in Muncie, Indiana in early May.

Omaha competed at the Tulsa Duals last year winning four events and beating two opponents, Tulsa and Kansas State, in head to head scoring. Dual meets are scored 5-3-1 for the top three finishers between the two schools in each event and with 5 points to the relay team with the faster time.
