Recapping the previous day’s games…

Men’s Basketball

Oakland 71 @ Fort Wayne 77

What You Need To Know: It was a damaging loss for the Golden Grizzlies who will be the 4th seed unless Omaha beats North Dakota State or Western Illinois drops both of their remaining home games. Fort Wayne is going to be their opponent as the 5th seed unless Kansas City beats Western Illinois and IUPUI.

Interesting Stat Lines: Fort Wayne got 17 from Frank Gaines but 13 of those were during their first 25 points. He did go 5-16 from the field but grabbed five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Thankfully others stepped up like Luis Jacobo with 15 and Joe Reed with 14. Oakland got 23 from Travis Bader but he was just 2-10 from three. The two teams were a combined 13-43 from deep. Oakland was 20-33 on two point shots and 16-29 on FTs… WHAT?!? Oakland had just eight assists on 25 made baskets.

Next Up: Oakland will host Morehead State on Saturday and Fort Wayne will host Bowling Green. Both of those matchups are in the BracketBusters event.

South Dakota State 78 @ Cal State Bakersfield 79

What You Need To Know: This was a CRAZY game. I got to listen to a lot of the 1st and 2nd OT. Nate Wolters hit a floater to keep SDSU alive by tying it with five seconds left in the 1st OT. In the 2nd OT Wolters went to the FT line with 40 seconds left in a tie game and missed two FTs. Later Chad White hit one of two FTs with the game still tied with 11 seconds left. Cal State Bakersfield came back and missed a three in the closing seconds but a foul called on Chad White with just 0.5 seconds left as Nate Wolters rebounded the miss gave the Roadrunners one last chance. They hit both FTs and got the 79-78 win. Shaky officiating but you can’t ignore 1-4 from the FT line by two shooters over 70% on the year in a tie game in the closing minute. Have to hit those FTs. The loss is damaging to South Dakota State’s resume. They would never get an at-large bit to the NCAA tournament, but they are playing for potential seeding if they do get in at this point.

Interesting Stat Lines: Wolters lead South Dakota State with 32 points 10 rebounds, and nine assists. Jordan Dykstra added a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Cal State Bakersfield was led by 22 by from Stephon Carter and 19 points and 10 rebounds by Brandon Barnes. South Dakota State out shot Cal State Bakersfield 50% to 36%, were better from deep 38% to 27%, and out rebounded them 44-38. The rebounding was a mirage though as Cal State Bakersfield grabbed a higher percentage of offensive rebounds available. Cal State Bakersfield got to the free throw line a ton and went 25-33 compared to 12-21 for South Dakota State. The Roadrunners were also less sloppy as they had 12 turnovers to 18 for South Dakota State.

Next Up: South Dakota State flies to Kentucky where they will face Murray State on Saturday evening in the BracketBusters. That game will be on ESPN2!
