2012-13 Summit League Basketball Power Rankings – February 20th

Men’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 21-7 (12-3) – Last Week: 1
Potential Range of Finishes – 1st through 2nd

Games last week: W vs. IUPUI, W vs. Western Illinois
Games this week: @ Cal State Bakersfield, @ Murray State

Doesn’t look like they’ll get budged from this top spot. I think any of the next three could beat them but they are the favorite.

WIU2.) Western Illinois – 19-6 (11-3) – Last Week: 2
Potential Range of Finishes – 1st through 4th
Games last week: W @ North Dakota State, L @ South Dakota State
Games this week: vs. Cleveland State

They’ve now lost nine straight to South Dakota State but by virtue of the sweep of North Dakota State they do remain 2nd.

OAK3.) Oakland – 15-13 (10-4) – Last Week: 3
Potential Range of Finishes – 2nd through 4th

Games last week: W @ South Dakota, W @ Kansas City
Games this week: @ Fort Wayne, vs. Morehead State

Continued their hot play last weekend though they nearly lost to South Dakota. They have a big road game at Fort Wayne tonight. I’m not going to be surprised at all of the Mastodons pull the upset, they are talented and capable. Oakland will be a very tough opponent in Sioux Falls.

NDST4.) North Dakota State – 20-7 (11-4) – Last Week: 4
Potential Range of Finishes – 2nd through 4th

Games last week: L vs. Western Illinois, W vs. IUPUI
Games this week: @ Akron, vs. Utah Valley

Playing out the regular season and not sure seeding matters much at this point though I imagine teams want to avoid Fort Wayne in the first round. Lose tiebreaker to Oakland since they haven’t beaten Western Illinois this year, so they probably need a Fort Wayne win to avoid 4th.

NEBO5.) Omaha – 10-18 (6-8) – Last Week: 5
Potential Range of Finishes – 5th through 7th

Games last week: W vs. Chicago State
Games this week: North Dakota

Since Omaha’s not going to affect seeding their finish matters only for pride. A win over either North Dakota State or South Dakota State would seal a top six finish.

IPFW6.) Fort Wayne – 12-16 (5-9) – Last Week: 8
Potential Range of Finishes – 5th through 8th
Games last week: W @ Kansas City, W @ South Dakota
Games this week: vs. Oakland, vs. Bowling Green

Got the HUGE road sweep last weekend and now have the season sweep of South Dakota and since they beat Omaha they also have the tiebreaker over Kansas City unless they beat Western Illinois. So they look really good for the 5th seed unless South Dakota or Kansas City can shock Western Illinois.

UMKC7.) Kansas City – 7-21 (4-10) – Last Week: 6
Potential Range of Finishes – 6th through 8th

Games last week: L vs. Fort Wayne, L vs. Oakland
Games this week: @ Tennessee Tech

Was a disappointing home stand for them but the season sweep over South Dakota does leave them in the lead for the 6th seed. If South Dakota State and Western Illinois do end up 1-2 that could be a nice spot to be in.

SDAK8.) South Dakota – 8-18 (4-10) – Last Week: 7
Potential Range of Finishes – 5th through 8th
Games last week: L vs. Oakland, L vs. Fort Wayne
Games this week: @ Montana State

Had a chance to pull off another upset but fell short against Oakland. Now having lost six straight since starting 4-4 they look headed for the 7th seed.

IUPUI9.) IUPUI – 6-22 (1-13) – Last Week: 9
Potential Range of Finishes – 9th
Games last week: L @ South Dakota State, L @ North Dakota State
Games this week: vs. Milwaukee

Wasn’t expected to do anything last week and didn’t. Three home games to end the regular season. None of the opponents are particularly great, so another win is certainly possible. After losing games to South Dakota State 80-65 and 82-45 it looks like they’ll have to face them one more time in Sioux Falls unless Omaha shocks the Jackrabbits.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Yea why not Nate Wolters again… it’s getting boring but you can’t ignore his performances. 18 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a brief 27 minutes against IUPUI, his lowest minute total since November. Then a huge 28 points, three rebounds, six assists, and three steals against Western Illinois. Between the two games he shot a crazy good 15-25 from the field and 7-12 from three.

Game of the ‘Next’ Week:
I’m going to pick Fort Wayne hosting Oakland on Wednesday night. The BracketBuster games are big and North Dakota State (of all the teams… the one playing least well) has a chance to make a statement at Akron, but I’ll stick to conference games and that could determine the 3-4 seeding.

Women’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 20-7 (12-2) – Last Week: 1
Potential Range of Finishes – 1st through 2nd

Games last week: L @ IUPUI, W @ Western Illinois
Games this week: vs. Omaha

They just can’t beat IUPUI and thus despite being 12-0 against everyone else will have to win another game or two. A 13th win on Thursday against Omaha will give them a share of the conference title, but they’ll need a 14th win or a 4th IUPUI loss before they’d have the #1 seed locked up.

IUPUI2.) IUPUI – 16-9 (9-3) – Last Week: 3
Potential Range of Finishes – 1st through 5th

Games last week: W vs. South Dakota State, W vs. North Dakota State
Games this week: @ South Dakota, @ Kansas City

Couple of tricky games on tap this week as they look to keep the pressure on the Jackrabbits. What a huge win that was last week. Look a strong pick for the 2nd seed at this point but anything can happen and South Dakota did dominate them in Indianapolis.

IPFW3.) Fort Wayne – 11-14 (7-6) – Last Week: 6
Potential Range of Finishes – 2nd through 7th

Games last week: W vs. Kansas City, W vs. South Dakota
Games this week: @ Oakland

Very solid home weekend with the win over KC and a strong performance against South Dakota. Are they they 3rd best team? I’m not sure but I think they can be that good and South Dakota sure didn’t earn this spot.

SDAK4.) South Dakota – 12-14 (7-6) – Last Week: 2
Potential Range of Finishes – 2nd through 8th

Games last week: L @ Oakland, L @ Fort Wayne
Games this week: vs. IUPUI, vs. Western Illinois

An awful weekend has left them sliding. A win over IUPUI could lead a resurgence that sees them recover to the #2 seed but a loss could see them lose four of their last five and slide down to the 4-5 game.

NEBO5.) Omaha – 16-8 (6-6) – Last Week: 4
Potential Range of Finishes – 2nd through 8th

Games last week: None
Games this week: @ South Dakota State, @ North Dakota State

Week off hopefully allowed some fresh legs for a team that isn’t very deep. One last chance for a huge upset when they travel to South Dakota State and then a game at North Dakota State that will probably determine what they’ll have to play for in their final homestand.

UMKC6.) Kansas City – 9-17 (5-8) – Last Week: 5
Potential Range of Finishes – 3rd through 9th
Games last week: L @ Fort Wayne, W @ Oakland
Games this week: vs. Western Illinois, vs. IUPUI

Lost a chance to sweep the season series from Fort Wayne and now they find themselves two full games behind them in the standings. Of course the two teams are currently in line for the 4th and 5th seed so it may not matter at all.

WIU7.) Western Illinois – 11-14 (4-8) – Last Week: 8
Potential Range of Finishes – 3rd through 9th

Games last week: W vs. North Dakota State, L vs. South Dakota State
Games this week: @ Kansas City, @ South Dakota

Got back on track in a big way last weekend. Tough road swing ahead but an upset on the road would give them a chance to move up next weekend while facing Fort Wayne and Oakland. Still a lot to play for.

NDST8.) North Dakota State – 9-17 (5-9) – Last Week: 7
Potential Range of Finishes – 4th through 9th

Games last week: L @ Western Illinois, L @ IUPUI
Games this week: vs. Omaha

Really needed to split that season series with Western Illinois. Now they host Omaha and if they lose that with a game vs. South Dakota State looming it’s hard to see them not finishing 5-11 and stuck in 8th or 9th.

OAK9.) Oakland – 9-16 (3-10) – Last Week: 9
Potential Range of Finishes – 6th through 9th

Games last week: W vs. South Dakota, L vs. Kansas City
Games this week: vs. Fort Wayne

Think Oakland will give Fort Wayne a good game. They’ve played well lately upsetting South Dakota and pushing several other teams at home. They lost by only two at Fort Wayne. Unlikely they move out of the 9th spot but a win here would make things interesting.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
I’ll give it to Ashley Luke who had a strong weekend scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the win over North Dakota State and scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds in the nine point loss to South Dakota State. She went 12-19 from the field in the two games and 5-6 from the FT line. It was also the first time this year she’s been without a turnover in back to back games. Instead she had four steals (of her 25 for the season) and two blocks.

Game of the ‘Next’ Week:
How about IUPUI at South Dakota on Thursday. I know the Coyotes are coming off a bad weekend but they did smash IUPUI last time. Could be an interesting one.
