Following the Summit – 2/16/13

Recapping the previous day’s games…

Men’s Basketball

Western Illinois 55 @ South Dakota State 64 – Game of the Week

What You Need To Know: They Jackrabbits got off to a great start and had a 12 point lead in the first half. The lead was just six though at the half and Western Illinois had tied it just a few minutes into the second half. South Dakota State regained control down the stretch and Western Illinois was only within a single basket once over the final eight minutes. South Dakota State got the season sweep with this big home win and now they are a win at Omaha from locking up the Summit title. Western Illinois still looks good for 2nd place but does need to take care of business in their final homestand.

Interesting Stat Lines: Nate Wolters had 28 points, six assists and three steals while Jordan Dykstra added 12 points and 10 rebounds for South Dakota State. Ceola Clark III erupted for 20 points, four rebounds, and four assists for Western Illinois. The Jackrabbits had a six rebound advantage but grabbed 11 offensive rebounds to just four for Western Illinois. That allowed them to win despite being out shot 50% to 42%.

Next Up: South Dakota State heads west for a mid-week game at Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday. Western Illinois hosts Cleveland State in the
BracketBusters game on Saturday.

Oakland 86 @ Kansas City 74

What You Need To Know: Oakland led most of the way and though the Kangaroos did their best to stay in it the game was never really in question as the ‘Roos never got closer than four in the 2nd half. Oakland stays in the hunt for 3rd with the road win. Kansas City stayed tied with South Dakota for the six seed and does have the tiebreaker.

Interesting Stat Lines: Oakland got 29 points and eight rebounds from Travis Bader and 17 points and six rebounds from Drew Valentine. Kansas city was led by 18 points from Nelson Kirksey. Oakland went 22-30 from the FT line compared to 9-14 for the ‘Roos. Oakland also dominated on the glass grabbing 35 rebounds to 25 for Kansas City and grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to seven for the Kangaroos.

Next Up: Oakland travels to Fort Wayne on Wednesday for their final road test in the conference schedule. Kansas City travels to Tennessee Tech on Saturday for their BracketBusters matchup.

Fort Wayne 64 @ South Dakota 51

What You Need To Know: The Mastodons took the lead 36 seconds into the game and never trailed. They led by 10+ late in the first half and the game was never closer than that even leading by 20+ late in the game. Fort Wayne took a decisive step up to the 5th seed and with a win over Oakland in either of their remaining games they’d have it locked up. South Dakota is in trouble and unless they win one more than Kansas City the rest of the way they’ll end up the seven seed.

Interesting Stat Lines: Fort Wayne was led by 22 points and five rebounds from Frank Gaines. South Dakota got 12 points and four rebounds from Trevor Gruis. The Mastodons were the better shooting team (44% to 38%) and had an advantage on the boards.

Next Up: Fort Wayne hosts Oakland on Wednesday in their final home Summit League game. The Mastodons have gotten very close to upsetting the top teams but haven’t pulled it off yet. South Dakota travels to Montana State on Sunday for their BracketBusters game.

IUPUI 39 @ North Dakota State 75

What You Need To Know: An obviously ugly game that the Jaguars did lead at one point early on. The lead was 22 by halftime. North Dakota State rebounded in a big way from their loss to Western Illinois and they still could have the two or three seed, either allowing them to avoid South Dakota State until the final. IUPUI is now losers of 12 straight and has just two more chances to pick up a second Summit League win after starting the league

Interesting Stat Lines: North Dakota State was led by a nice 10 point, four rebound, four assist, and three steal performance from Lawrence Alexander. They were able to reach deep into the bench in this one. IUPUI got 14 points from Lyonell Gaines, their only player in double figures. North Dakota State outshot IUPUI 49% to 33%, out rebounded them by 10, and won the turnover battle 15 to 7.

Next Up: North Dakota State travels to Akron for their BracketBusters matchup witch will be on ESPN2 on Friday night. IUPUI hosts Milwaukee in the BracketBusters on Saturday as they desperately search for a win in 2013.

Women’s Basketball

Kansas City 59 @ Oakland 53

What You Need To Know: Oakland led this one 32-29 at the half and had grown the lead to 41-33 with 12 minutes left. It was still 47-40 Oakland with 8:51 left before Kansas City went on a 13-1 run to take a five point lead with 4:14 left. They held on for the six point win. The win moved Kansas City to 5-8 and moved them into the 5th seed position but also just two games out of 3rd. Oakland remains in last place.

Interesting Stat Lines: Eilise O’Connor had 21 points and eight assists to key Kansas City. Oakland was led by 14 points from Victoria Lipscomb. The Golden Grizzlies were plus one on the boards including grabbing 10 offensive rebounds to Kansas City’s four. Kansas City might have made the difference by going 12-12 at the FT line while Oakland was just 6-10.

Next Up: Kansas City hosts Western Illinois on Thursday in another important matchup in the bottom half of the standings. Oakland is off until hosting Fort Wayne on Saturday.

South Dakota 64 @ Fort Wayne 71

What You Need To Know: After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes Fort Wayne grabbed control of the game leading by as many as 11 before settling on a 36-28 lead at the break. South Dakota made a real good game of it in the 2nd half but Fort Wayne would grab the lead for good with 8:02 left. The lead was just two at 66-64 with 2:10 left but South Dakota wouldn’t score again. Fort Wayne is making moves and they now are tied for 3rd place with South Dakota.

Interesting Stat Lines: Fort Wayne got 23 points, four rebounds, and four assists from Amanda Hyde while South Dakota got a huge game from Polly Harrington who went 7-7 from the field and 4-4 from the FT line to score 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Fort Wayne only committed nine turnovers compared to 16 for South Dakota.

Next Up: Fort Wayne heads to Oakland on Saturday and with another win would guarantee a conference season of at least .500. South Dakota is reeling and now hosts IUPUI in a crucial matchup.

North Dakota State 40 @ IUPUI 57

What You Need To Know: IUPUI led by just one, 20-19, at the half but pulled away during the 2nd half. IUPUI is almost surely the two seed in the conference tournament but they aren’t going to let South Dakota State have any room to spare at the moment. North Dakota State continues to slide after they were sitting at 5-6. They’re now in line for the six seed but could fall further.

Interesting Stat Lines: The Jaguars got 10 points from Dawn Luster along with six assists. She and Kerah Nelson were their only players in double figures. North Dakota State had just one in double figures, Danielle DeGagne with 11 points and eight assists. IUPUI out shot the Bison 41% to 26% and grabbed 48 rebounds compared to just 29 for North Dakota State.

Next Up: IUPUI heads to South Dakota and can’t afford to drop a game at all in their attempt to catch South Dakota State. North Dakota State is off until Saturday when they host Omaha. They can still move up the conference standings in the final weeks but they need that game.

South Dakota State 61 @ Western Illinois 52

What You Need To Know: South Dakota State held a comfortable lead for most of the game. South Dakota State needs one more win to lock up a share of the conference title. Two more to win it outright. Western Illinois is in line for the 7th seed but are within a 1/2 game of the five seed.

Interesting Stat Lines: The Jackrabbits were led by 13 points from Gabrielle Boever but showed their depth and no one played more than 29 minutes. Western Illinois got 16 points from Saule Kontautaite but were outrebounded 46-32 and went 9-13 at the FT line while South Dakota State was 20-29.

Next Up: South Dakota State hosts Omaha on Thursday looking to lock up a share of the conference title and potentially claiming it all by themselves if South Dakota can knock off IUPUI. Western Illinois goes to Kansas City on Thursday night with a chance to pick up a huge win.
