2013 Omaha Softball–Games #8, #9, & #10 Recaps – Oklahoma State, Iowa, and Dayton

Omaha kept up their perfect start to the season with two more wins on Friday. Omaha beat Dayton 9-2 in a dominant performance in the Mavericks’ first game of the North Texas Lovelace Invitational. They followed it up with a narrow 4-3 win over North Texas Friday evening.

Omaha 1, Oklahoma State 0 (8 innings)

Omaha got their first win over a BCS-level opponent beating Big XII Oklahoma State on Saturday 1-0. Omaha’s first win over the Big XII didn’t come easy as Omaha didn’t have a hit until the 6th inning. Dana Elsasser kept them in it though as she only gave up one hit and walked no one in her eight innings. Omaha got the win when Allie Mathewson doubled home Mara Eeman in the 8th. Eeman had started the inning on 2nd base per extra inning rules.

Best hitting performance: Since Omaha had just two hits and only one of them scored a runner I think it’s safe to give this to Allie Mathewson. She also got a walk during the game.

Pitching recap: Dominant Dana Elsasser was on display Saturday as we pitched eight scoreless innings only giving up one hit. She struck out eight.

Iowa 2, Omaha 1

Omaha’s winning streak came to an end as Iowa took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held on for a 2-1 win. Dana Elsasser pitched again for the Mavericks and was a little less effective giving up nine hits and a walk. Elsasser gave up a two-out double in the first to plate both runs. Omaha left runners at 1st in each of the first four innings and stranded Allie Mathewson on third during that first inning. Omaha loaded the bases with one out in the 7th inning but could only plate one run as Lindsay Redding and Campbell Ditto couldn’t get a hit.

Best hitting performance: Allie Mathewson gets it again as she went 2-3 with the lone RBI and a double. She also added a walk.

Pitching recap: Dana Elsasser pitched all six innings giving up nine this and a walk and the two runs. She struckout three.

Omaha 4, Dayton 0

Omaha got their 4th win of the season on Sunday against Dayton but it was a lot closer than that score would indicate. It was still 0-0 in the middle of the 6th before Omaha finally started plating runners. Campbell Ditto led off with a double and Molly Negrete tripled her home. Mara Eeman and Allie Mathewson added RBI singles, Mathewson’s scoring two runs and Omaha left runners on 2nd and 3rd at the end of the inning. Dana Elsasser didn’t make them worry at all as she went the distance only allowing two hits and two walks.

Best hitting performance: For the sake of variance how about Molly Negrete who went 1-3 but scored a run, had an RBI, and hit a triple.

Pitching recap: Dana Elsasser with another great performance. The two hits and two walks in seven innings showing her dominance. Only struck out three but now 6-1 on the season.

Upcoming opponent:
Omaha’s got a slightly simpler weekend ahead as they’ll face Jackson State and Evansville in Jackson, Mississippi at the Jackson State Tournament. Evansville, who Omaha will face three times, is 0-5 while Jackson State, who Omaha will face twice, is 3-8 with the wins over Southeast Missouri State, Central Arkansas, and Lamar. They will face Belhaven twice on Tuesday before hosting the games this weekend.

With how Omaha is playing I don’t think they’ll be satisfied with anything less than 5-0 next weekend.
