Recapping the previous day’s games…

Men’s Basketball

Oakland 76 @ South Dakota 75

What You Need To Know: Oakland overcame an eight-point halftime deficit grabbing the lead just 4:20 into the 2nd half. For the next few minutes the game was a real back and forth battle until Oakland grabbed the lead with 8:49 left and would never trail again. South Dakota kept close and tied it with 22 seconds left. Oakland’s Duke Mondy drew a foul with four seconds left and hit one of two FTs to grab a one point lead. Juevol Myles had a runner in the paint at the buzzer but it was no good and Oakland escaped with a win.

Interesting Stat Lines: Oakland got double-doubles from Drew Valentine (14 points and 10 rebounds) and Corey Petros (17 points and 13 rebounds). Travis Bader was held to just 16, his lowest total in a Summit League game this season. Brandon Bos had 22 points and Juevol Myles had 23 for South DAkota. The Coyotes out shot the Golden Grizzlies 50% to 46%, had nine turnovers to Oakland’s 11 and shot 11-13 on FTs to Oakland’s 7-13. The problem was them getting out rebounded 39 to 27 and only grabbing one offensive rebound to Oakland’s 11.

Next Up: Oakland heads to Kansas City and can’t afford any losses in their battle amongst the top four. South Dakota host Fort Wayne with the winner having the inside track to the five seed now.

Western Illinois 49 @ North Dakota State 36

What You Need To Know: This was a dominant defensive performance by Western Illinois. The pace was slow, but North Dakota still shot 28% from the field and went 1-13 from three. The score was actually 22-17 North Dakota State at the half, much like the game in Western Illinois. It was a four point game with four minutes left but Western Illinois hit two threes to turn a five point lead into what was a basically insurmountable eleven. The Leathernecks stay in the lead for the Summit League standings and could win the regular season title with a win Saturday at South Dakota State.

Interesting Stat Lines: Western Illinois’s Terell Parks had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Western Illinois only took 38 FGs in the entire game, shooting 45% from the field and 38% from three.

Next Up: Western Illinois heads to South Dakota State in what amounts to a de facto regular season title game. North Dakota State is basically out of the running for the regular season title but avoiding the 4th seed would be a big help and a game against IUPUI should help them.

Fort Wayne 65 @ Kansas City 60

What You Need To Know: Fort Wayne led by eight at the half but Kanas City didn’t go away, getting as close as one at 42-41. The Kangaroos had it as low as four with 1:22 to go but missed a three to cut the lead to one with 41 seconds left and didn’t get a chance to threaten again. The two teams are now tied at 4-9 (5th place, 4th seed) and split the season series. Fort Wayne currently holds the tiebreaker with a win over Omaha.

Interesting Stat Lines: Fort Wayne got 16 from Frank Gaines who took just seven shots, his lowest total as a Mastodon. Fred Chatmon of Kansas City had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Fort Wayne was 22-44 from the field (50%) and 16-27 from the FT line (59%). They also hit 5-12 threes.

Next Up: Fort Wayne heads to South Dakota looking to sweep the season series and make the 5th seed a strong possibility. Kansas City hosts Oakland as they look to recover and avoid the 7th seed.

IUPUI 45 @ South Dakota State 82

What You Need To Know: Ugly game where the Jackrabbits led by 20 at the half, 41-21. This could be a preview of a Saturday 1-8 game in Sioux Falls that no one will care to see.

Interesting Stat Lines: South Dakota State got a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds from Jordan Dykstra. Nate Wolters had “only” 18 points. Donovan Gibbs was the only Jaguar in double figures with 16. South Dakota State out shot IUPUI 54% to 36% and went 11-22 from three while the Jaguars were 3-16. They also beat them on the boards 40-21 and shot 19 FTs to IUPUI’s six.

Next Up: South Dakota State hosts Western Illinois and with a win there would just need to beat Omaha to win the league. Huuuuge game for the Jackrabbits. IUPUI goes to North Dakota State looking to end an 11 game winning streak.

Women’s Basketball

South Dakota 46 @ Oakland 59

What You Need To Know: As bad as Oakland has been, 3-9 in conference, they now have wins against IUPUI and South Dakota. Very weird. Oakland trailed 22-20 at the half and this was tied at 34-34 with 11:02 left before Oakland closed the game on a 25-12 run. It’s a damaging loss for South Dakota who would have been within a half game of IUPUI for 2nd and still have a home game against them remaining.

Interesting Stat Lines: Olivia Nash had her best game to date with 18 points and 15 rebounds while Sinclair Russell added 12 points and 10 rebounds. South Dakota got 16 points from Tempestt Wilson, their only player in double figures. Oakland won despite shooting 34% including 3-16 from the field. That’s partially because South Dakota went 18-62 (29%). Oakland grabbed 54 rebounds, compared to 36 for the Coyotes, including 18 offensive rebounds..

Next Up: Oakland hosts Kansas City and a win would give the Golden Grizzlies a season sweep and perhaps let them avoid the #8 seed. South Dakota heads to Fort Wayne and needs a win to avoid falling into a tie with the Mastodons.

Kansas City 42 @ Fort Wayne 49

What You Need To Know: Fort Wayne got to 6-6 on the year, now tied with Omaha for 4th place but definitely in line for the 4th seed at this point as no one else is within a game. This one started slow with a 19 all tie at the half. There were 14 points scored in the final 40 seconds after 77 in the first 39:20 of the game. That’s almost 11 times as many points/minute.

Interesting Stat Lines: Only four players scored for Fort Wayne who got 15 from Haley Sibert and Erin Murphy along with 13 from Amanda Hyde. Kansas City had no one reach double figures but seven players did score. In a matchup of two of the best scorers in the Summit League Amanda Hyde and Eilise O’Connor combined to go 5-27 from the field, 0-7 from three, for just 21 points. They did manage to go 11-12 from the FT line. Fort Wayne shot 26%, 4-21 from three, and WON! They went 21-24 from the FT line compared to 5-5 for Kansas City. Fort Wayne made just 12 baskets and won. Crazy.

Next Up: Fort Wayne hosts South Dakota and a win ties the two for 3rd place. Kansas City’s three game losing streak means they go to Oakland needing a win to avoid falling into last place.

South Dakota State 67 @ IUPUI 70 – Game of the Week

What You Need To Know: Well every time these two meet it seems like the conference title race is back on. IUPUI is the only team to beat South Dakota State and they are still a full 2 games back, but they only need a tie now. Additionally they are only one back in the loss column. They still need South Dakota State to lose to someone else, anyone else, but it’s possible. South Dakota State looked in good shape up 49-42 with 12:07 left but a 9-0 run over the next three plus minutes gave the Jaguars the lead. IUPUI took the lead for good with 2:05 left on a DeAirra Goss jumper. South Dakota State had a chance to tie it after Gabrielle Boever hit a layup and was fouled, but she missed the Ft and IUPUI got a layup from Kerah Nelson to provide the final margin. Megan Waytashek missed a three in the closing seconds to end the Jackrabbits’ chances.

Interesting Stat Lines: IUPUI got 16 points from DeAirra Goss and 15 from Katie Comello. South Dakota State got 20 points from Megan Waytashek. The Jaguars went 17-31 from the FT line while South Dakota State went 24-37. The Jackrabbits were 1-17 from three (6%) but went 20-30 inside the arc.

Next Up: It’s a set back for the Jackrabbits but they head to Western Illinois knowing three wins and they are still conference champions. IUPUI hosts North Dakota State and needs to avoid the letdown they had right before beating South Dakota State the last time these teams met.

North Dakota State 50 @ Western Illinois 55

What You Need To Know: Western Illinois got up 15 in the middle part of the 2nd half before North Dakota State rallied to get within two with 50 seconds left. Two Ashley Luke FTs put the Leathernecks back up by four and they held on for the win. Very reminiscent of when North Dakota State came back from down 24 when these two played in Fargo but couldn’t finish, losing by two. Both these teams now seem to be in the discussion for seeds 5-8 with Fort Wayne starting to pull away into 4th.

Interesting Stat Lines: Western Illinois got 18 points and 11 rebounds from Ashley Luke while North Dakota State was led by 15 points and 15 rebounds from Danielle DeGagne. Western Illinois shot 31% from the field while the Bison were 32% from the field. Ewww. Lots of poor shooting Summit games lately. Western Illinois won the rebounding battle 48-42 and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds.

Next Up: Western Illinois got a big win and at 4-7 is still within range of moving up a few spots, but a home game at South Dakota State won’t make that easy. North Dakota State goes to IUPUI and is thick in the middle of the race for 4th through 8th.
