2013 Omaha Softball–Games #3, #4 & #5 Recaps–Iona and Detroit (2)

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks,Recaps,Softball — Jon Green @ 1:18 am

Omaha is off to a blazing 5-0 start after beating Iona on Saturday and Detroit once on Saturday and once on Sunday.

The Mavericks got Allie Mathewson’s third lead-off home run in three games in the first game to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They added eight more in the 3rd inning keyed by a Allie Mathewson three-run home run. It was her 4th Hr of the season. Later in the game Molly Negrete had a two run HR in the 4th and Amber Lutmer hit a grand slam in the 5th inning. Omaha ended up winning 16-0 in five innings.

In the 2nd game of the day Omaha found them behind for the first time this season after giving up the 1st run of the game in the 1st inning. Omaha would take the lead in the 3rd on a three-run Amber Lutmer home run. That would be enough damage to win the game but they got a two-run home run from Ashton Hughes later in the game and went on to win 7-3.

On Sunday Omaha took the 1-0 lead in the 1st inning after Campbell Ditto homered for the Mavericks. Detroit touched Dana Elsasser up for two runs in the 5th inning, her first runs allowed of the year. Omaha responded right away in the bottom of the 5th as an Amber Lutmer three-run home run was the difference maker in a four run inning. Omaha shut down Detroit the rest of the way and go the 5-2 win to move to 5-0 on the year.

There were some fantastic performances by Omaha this weekend. Molly Negrete went 9-17 this weekend with five RBIs. Amber Lutmer hit four home runs and had 13 RBIs. Allie Mathewson had four home runs as well with six RBIs. Campbell Ditto hit two HRs and scored eight of Omaha’s 41 runs.

Defensively the Mavericks held their opponents to just six runs and 16 hits. The Mavericks had two shutouts and Dana Elsasser pitched 18 innings giving up just two runs.  It’s as good a start as you can ever ask for.

Upcoming opponent:
Omaha is on the road again next weekend (of course). They’ll be traveling to Denton, Texas, just north of Dallas, for the North Texas Lovelace Invitational. Omaha will be facing Dayton (hasn’t played this year) twice, North Texas (3-2 this season), Oklahoma State (2-2 this season), and Iowa (3-2 this season).

The first game will be against Dayton 11:30 AM on Friday and the 2nd game is vs. North Texas at 7 PM that night.
