Summit League Bracketbuster Matchups

I know it’s been a couple of days since these were actually announced but we can still go over the matchups.

Home Teams:
RPI #133 – Western Illinois – We predicted Illinois State but that didn’t happen. For shame since the Redbirds were 18th on the road side while Western Illinois was 18th on the home side. Cleveland State was the choice. The Vikings are 12-12 on the year, 187th in RPI, and 27th on the road side. I can’t imagine Western Illinois is thrilled with that selection though the return trip is not too bad. Cleveland State did beat Notre Dame earlier this year. But the wrong Notre Dame (Ohio)…

RPI #147 – Oakland – Morehead State is 21 on the road side and #160 overall. Oakland was 21 on the home side. It is only 400 miles between the schools. The Eagles are 11-13 on the year and beat Indiana State earlier in the year.

RPI #304 – Omaha – Omaha moved up too far (51st on the home side) for Northern Colorado and ended up with North Dakota, as we kinda expected. North Dakota is #279 and was 49th on the road side. It’s a return to a matchup Omaha has plenty of experience with in the past. Their last matchup was for the NCC Championship. North Dakota is 9-12 but is 6-6 in the Big Sky.

RPI #309 – Fort Wayne – Bowling Green ended up at 51st while Fort Wayne was 52nd. Great matchup there. They do have a nice win over Wright State and are 9-13 on the year. The Falcons did lose by 14 to IUPUI earlier in the year.

RPI #310 – IUPUI – Milwaukee was not a team we had talked much about but is a decent match. The Panthers have struggled to a 5-18 start and are #313 overall. Amazingly they beat Davidson earlier in the year.

Road Teams:
RPI #64 – North Dakota State – The Bison travel to Akron on Friday the 22nd for a 6 PM CT tip on ESPN2. Akron was #4 on the home side and is #52 overall so it’s not like North Dakota State is playing some lowly ranked team, though I’d hoped for one of the MVC teams. Akron is 18-4 and 9-0 in the MAC. Their losses were at Detroit, at Creighton, Oklahoma State and at Coastal Carolina. The last loss was on December 15th.

RPI #66 – South Dakota State – South Dakota State didn’t get as good of a draw. They head to Murray State. It will be a cool matchup between Isaiah Cannon and Nate Wolters and the Racers are 16-5, but they are #117 in the RPI and #14 on the home side. The Jackrabbits are #3 on the home side. How does that work out? The game will be on ESPN2 at 7 PM CT on Saturday the 23rd.

RPI #228 – South Dakota – South Dakota drew Montana State. It’s a little mismatched for my tastes at Montana State is #300 and 47th on the home side while South Dakota is #228 and 33rd on the road side. Oh well…. battle of the northern plains I guess. Montana State is 10-10 but has gone 7-5 so far in the Big Sky.

RPI #264 – Kansas City – The ‘Roos got Tennessee Tech. Now remember Montana State being 47th on the home side… well Tennessee Tech is 39th. Explain that one considering Kansas City was 11 slots behind South Dakota. It is a decent match in terms of geography I guess. The Golden Eagles are 8-14 on the year and 2-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
