2012-13 Summit League Basketball Power Rankings – February 6th

Men’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 18-6 (9-2) – Last Week: 1
Games last week: W vs. South Dakota, W vs. Kansas City
Games this week: vs. Fort Wayne, vs. Oakland

Has now beaten every team in the conference during their nine game winning streak. Definitely the team to beat for now. Game at Oakland on Saturday should be fantastic.

NDST2.) North Dakota State – 18-5 (9-2) – Last Week: 2
Games last week: W vs. Kansas City, W vs. South Dakota
Games this week: vs. Oakland, vs. Fort Wayne

Had a real nice weekend after losing two straight (not that anyone was too worried about that). They get Oakland on Thursday and the battle between them and South Dakota State could come down to whichever team doesn’t drop a game they have no business losing.

WIU3.) Western Illinois – 17-5 (9-2) – Last Week: 3
Games last week: W @ IUPUI
Games this week: vs. Omaha

The Leathernecks will only play once on back-to-back weekends ahead of the trip to the Dakotas. Is that an advantage (fresher legs) or is it a disadvantage to not be in the rhythm of playing Thursday-Saturday the last two weekends? Omaha would seem to be a very winnable game but can’t be overlooked.

OAK4.) Oakland – 11-13 (6-4) – Last Week: 4
Games last week: W @ Omaha
Games this week: vs. North Dakota State, vs. South Dakota State

Did what they needed to against Omaha. Now this weekend they get their last chance to prove they belong in the conversation with the top three and not way down the standings in fourth.

SDAK5.) South Dakota – 8-15 (4-7) – Last Week: 5
Games last week: L @ South Dakota State, L @ North Dakota State
Games this week: @ Kansas City

Well they did okay in the two weekend games. North Dakota State wasn’t particularly close but South Dakota State was a game for a while. The Coyotes are struggling and a game at Kansas City is a Godsend. If they don’t win this one and Omaha splits this weekend the Coyotes will be out of the top five.

NEBO6.) Omaha – 8-17 (5-7) – Last Week: 6
Games last week: W vs. Fort Wayne, L vs. Oakland
Games this week: @ Western Illinois, @ IUPUI

I think they have to be happy with the 1-1 weekend. Oakland was a tough task and the Mavericks battled most of the way before falling off the pace. This weekend another 1-1 split would be acceptable as well I think. After this the Mavericks have just two Summit League games remaining, home contests with the Dakotas.

IPFW7.) Fort Wayne – 10-14 (3-7) – Last Week: 7
Games last week: L @ Omaha
Games this week: vs. South Dakota State, vs. North Dakota State

What can you say… they had a chance against Omaha but couldn’t get the W…. the lack of Mario Hines was a big factor in that one. Now they get to host the Dakotas. Big games to get excited about but not an easy chance to move up the standings at all.

UMKC8.) Kansas City – 6-18 (3-8) – Last Week: 8
Games last week: L @ North Dakota State, L @ South Dakota State
Games this week: @ Houston Baptist, vs. South Dakota

Kansas City looked awful last weekend. Now they travel to Houston Baptist for a non-conference and host South Dakota. Needless to say they need to get back to that brief winning spell they had. South Dakota isn’t playing much better and a win draws the teams even. Finishing outside of the bottom three is a big advantage and Kansas City could still do it… but they need this one.

IUPUI9.) IUPUI – 6-19 (1-10) – Last Week: 9
Games last week: L vs. Western Illinois
Games this week: vs. Omaha

Didn’t get embarrassed by Western Illinois but it is now eight straight losses. Still do host Omaha, South Dakota, and Kansas City, so they could still pick up another win or two.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Nobody really had a two-game weekend that jumped out at me as clearly the best so we’ll go for Frank Gaines of Fort Wayne. Gaines had 32 points on 11-19 shooting and added nine rebounds, two assists and three steals for the Mastodons at Omaha on Thursday.

Game of the ‘Next’ Week:
I suppose you can take your pick of South Dakota State/North Dakota State at Oakland. I’ll take the Jackrabbits-Golden Grizzlies matchup on Saturday.

Women’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 17-6 (9-1) – Last Week: 1
Games last week: W @ South Dakota, W @ Kansas City
Games this week: vs. Fort Wayne, vs. Oakland

Best team in the league. Not good enough to sleepwalk through games (though maybe they could this weekend) but clearly the best.

SDAK2.) South Dakota – 11-12 (6-4) – Last Week: 2
Games last week: L vs. South Dakota State, L vs. North Dakota State
Games this week: vs. Kansas City

It was a bad week. Losing to South Dakota State isn’t bad but the home loss to North Dakota State was not remotely anticipated. I’m willing to excuse it as letdown game but they need to prove they belong near the top. Fortunately the Kansas City game on Saturday is a great chance!

IUPUI3.) IUPUI – 13-9 (6-3) – Last Week: 3
Games last week: W @ Western Illinois, W vs. Chicago State
Games this week: @ Omaha

After South Dakota’s rough weekend I’m almost willing to move IUPUI back to #2. Problem is South Dakota did win by 20 at IUPUI just a couple weeks ago and it’s not like IUPUI had a good win this week… Both teams they played are struggling mightily.

UMKC4.) Kansas City – 8-15 (4-6) – Last Week: 6
Games last week: W vs. North Dakota State, L vs. South Dakota State
Games this week: @ South Dakota

Hottest team in the league. They got their first conference win on January 12th vs. South Dakota and have only lost one game by more than a point since then (55-46 to Oakland… what?!?!) their other two losses in that stretch @ IUPUI and vs. South Dakota State, each by a single point. Impressive run that has them moving up and a likely 4th seed in the Summit League tournament. Big game at South Dakota on Saturday.

NEBO5.) Omaha – 15-7 (5-5) – Last Week: 4
Games last week: L @ Fort Wayne, W @ Oakland
Games this week: vs. Western Illinois, vs. IUPUI

Not a horrible weekend as they got the split with the win at Oakland. Really could have won at Fort Wayne and will be wishing they had won that game to go two games clear for 4th place. Has a chance to get in good position for the final few weeks if they can take care of the games at home this weekend. Western Illinois looks very beatable but IUPUI should be a great matchup.

NDST6.) North Dakota State – 8-14 (4-6) – Last Week: 7
Games last week: L @ Kansas City, W @ South Dakota
Games this week: vs. Oakland, vs. Fort Wayne

They’ve now beaten IUPUI, Kansas City, and South Dakota. Definitely a team with talent and look out because if they win a couple this weekend they could be up to 6-6 and have a good chance at the #4 seed as well.

IPFW7.) Fort Wayne – 8-13 (4-5) – Last Week: 8
Games last week: W vs. Omaha
Games this week: @ South Dakota State, @ North Dakota State

Won back-to-back games for the first time all year and their reward is a game at South Dakota State. That will be a doozy but North Dakota State is slightly easier. Mastodons won’t be favored to win either game but still have some talent. Five of final seven Summit League games on road so don’t expect them to jump out of bottom three.

WIU8.) Western Illinois – 10-12 (3-6) – Last Week: 5
Games last week: L vs. IUPUI
Games this week: @ Omaha

Well it wasn’t a blowout… only lost by six to IUPUI. This team is in shambles right now having lost five of six games since destroying UNO by 27. Will reuniting with UNO lead them back to the winning way or see that first result avenged? Still isn’t out of the race for 4th but aren’t playing like it right now.

OAK9.) Oakland – 8-13 (2-7) – Last Week: 9
Games last week: L vs. Omaha
Games this week: @ North Dakota State, @ South Dakota State

Hard season continues. Lost by one to North Dakota State at home so they are looking for some revenge after a heartbreaker in that one.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Megan Waytashek gets it this time. 18 points on 7-14 shooting on Wednesday, 33 points on 11-17 shooting on Saturday. Between the two games she went 9-14 from three. Woah. Had seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks between the two games, but this award was mostly about the scoring production.

Game of the ‘Next’ Week:
South Dakota hosting Kansas City on Saturday has the makings of a great one. First matchup was a four point game and with how hot the ‘Roos are playing they have a great chance to upset the Coyotes in Vermillion.

Do you all agree with the rankings at all?  Think I’m way off on some teams? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
