Women’s Basketball

South Dakota State @ South Dakota

What You Need To Know: The Jackrabbits took firm control of the Summit League race with this win. They now are 8-1 in the league with South Dakota a full two games back in 2nd with South Dakota State already having a season sweep… nearly an impossible hole for the Coyotes. IUPUI at 5-3 has perhaps a better chance because with a win over SDSU in Indianapolis they’d be within a game and hold the tiebreaker.

SDSU built a 15-9 lead early on but a 14-0 run by the Jackrabbits over the next four minutes turned it into a 23-15 lead. South Dakota State led by as much as 12 in the first half and led 37-24 at the break. South Dakota got it down to two at 45-43 with 9:58 left but South Dakota State pulled back away and was very strong defensively giving up just two points from the 6:22 mark to the 0:39 mark.

Interesting Stat Lines: Megan Waytashek of SDSU scored 18 to lead all-scorers. South Dakota State was out shot 41% to 39% but did go 5-12 from three. South Dakota State had 11 more FTs (despite committing only three less fouls) and were +12 on the glass grabbing 18 offensive rebounds out of 38 opportunities.

Next Up: South Dakota State is at Kansas City on Saturday. I suppose if there’s any game the rest of the way I’d see as a trap for them it’s this one. South Dakota hosts North Dakota State on Saturday. If they aren’t really in contention for the #1 spot then they are fighting IUPUI for the #2 seed and every game is going to matter. No room for a letdown after the big game.
