Recapping the previous day’s games…

Men’s Basketball

Western Illinois 43 @ Fort Wayne 40
What You Need To Know: Western Illinois didn’t have a field goal inside of the final 12:49. They didn’t score in the final 8:35. Fort Wayne had the game at 43-40 with 1:34 left. After that they missed a three pointer, gave up an offensive rebound as Western Illinois ended up running 42 seconds off the clock, and finally Fort Wayne missed another three pointer in the final seconds. Very important win for Western Illinois to avoid a road upset.

Interesting Stat Lines: It was the least points Fort Wayne allowed against a D1 team in almost three years…. too bad that didn’t help them enough. Game’s leading scorer was Mario Hines of Fort Wayne with 13 on 6-7 shooting.

Next Up: Western Illinois travels to Oakland in what could be a very interesting game Saturday. Fort Wayne will host IUPUI. Should be a winnable game but these interstate rivalries can always be interesting.

IUPUI 71 @ Oakland 89

What You Need To Know: Oakland’s Travis Bader scored… 47 points. Yes, he out scored both teams in the Western Illinois-Fort Wayne tilt. It was the highest scoring total of the year in men’s basketball and 3rd highest in Oakland history. He scored a lot of his points on a school record 11 threes.

Interesting Stat Lines: Other than the one above of course? Bader took an amazing 18 threes and 24 total shots in the game. Corey Petros had a double-double (12 points and 11 rebounds) for Oakland while Ryan Bass had nine assists (easy to do when your teammate is dropping threes like Bader did). How about this one… Duke Mondy had four five’s… five rebounds, five assists, five steals… and five points (okay actually 11). For IUPUI Sean Espositio did score 21 in the loss while Greg Rice had 10 assists.

Next Up: Oakland hosts Western Illinois on Saturday. Want to prove that loss to South Dakota was a fluke, good chance to show it there. IUPUI heads to Fort Wayne… not getting much easier.

Omaha 95 @ South Dakota 90

What You Need To Know: First ever Summit League road win for the Mavericks. Quite different game than the one in the Ralston Arena where South Dakota won by 23. Game came down to the final minutes but South Dakota never got closer than one.

Interesting Stat Lines: Omaha shot 56% from the field and 13-26 from deep. Justin Simmons led Omaha with 26 points including five 3FG. Alex Welhouse had his best game of the year with 17 points and nine rebounds. South Dakota got 26 by Juevol Myles in the losing effort.

Next Up: Omaha travels to Kansas City looking for a season sweep. Both Omaha and Kansas City are improved from their last matchup. South Dakota is off on Saturday, their next game is at South Dakota State on Thursday the 31st.

Women’s Basketball

Kansas City 46 @ IUPUI 47

What You Need To Know: IUPUI needed a miracle comeback to get this one. It was 46-42 Kansas City when Nevena Markovic got a basket with 1:01 left. IUPUI got a steal but Dee-Dee Bellamy only went 1-2 at the FT line to leave them down one with 43 seconds left. Kansas City turned it over and IUPUI was able to get a layup with only seven seconds left from Dawn Luster to take the lead. Emile Blakesley missed a three pointer for Kansas City and the Jaguars escaped.

Interesting Stat Lines: First of all Eilise O’Connor is on fire. She scored 24 on Thursday to follow up the 26 and 34 last week. Much like last week her scoring is around half of the team’s total. No one else had more than eight points and Kansas City has 23 turnovers along with their 25 missed FGs. IUPUI didn’t have a single player reach double figures, Kerah Nelson and Markovic were highest with nine points. Ten players did score for the Jaguars who won despite shooting 31% and turning it over 21 times themselves. Big help was their 20 offensive rebounds out of 39 opportunities. Needed every last one of them in the end.

Next Up: IUPUI can’t afford to be sloppy on Saturday as South Dakota comes to town and is one of the better teams in the league. Kansas City heads to Western Illinois looking for an upset.

South Dakota 63 @ Western Illinois 60

What You Need To Know: This was a tight game throughout with South Dakota leading by as many as eight and never trailing by more than five. It was a 36-33 Coyote lead at the break and the lead moved around between two and seven in the second half. Western Illinois cut it to three at 63-60 with 3:42 left but the teams went scoreless from that point. Western Illinois’ final five possessions ended like this: turnover, missed layup, missed layup, missed jumper, missed three pointer which was followed up with an offensive rebound and a miss front end of a 1-and-1. Ouch.

Interesting Stat Lines: Double-double from Lisa Loeffler of South Dakota, 12 points and 13 rebounds. Ashley Luke had 19 for Western Illinois while Saule Kontautaite followed up her 30 point performance last week with… seven points. She’s now been at seven or below in four of the last six games. Bizarre.

Next Up: South Dakota travels to IUPUI for a crucial game for both teams while Western Illinois looks to rebound at home vs. Kansas City.

North Dakota State 52 @ Omaha 61

What You Need To Know: Game was very tight early but Omaha took the lead for good with 5:09 to go in the first half. Lead was up to nine, 32-23 at halftime and was as high as 13 in the second half. Paige Frauendorfer made her way into the 1,000 point club for Omaha. Injuries have decimated North Dakota State who only played seven players.

Interesting Stat Lines: Omaha’s Frauendorfer scored 25 points on 10-16 shooting and had eight rebounds. Jamie Nash had 11 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds, three steals and… ten turnovers. Quite the busy night for her. North Dakota State had a slow night as they shot just 31%. Omaha won despite turning it over 23 times.

Next Up: Omaha hosts South Dakota State and will see just how they compare finally to the best team in the league. North Dakota State is off this weekend before traveling to Kansas City next Thursday.
