2012-13 Summit League Basketball Power Rankings – January 23rd

Sorry for the delay this week… been busy with some work and haven’t had time to update this much!

Men’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 15-6 (6-2) – Last Week: 3
Games last week: W @ Western Illinois, W @ IUPUI
Games this week: vs. North Dakota State

I’m moving South Dakota State to the top this week. They’re getting on a roll and with those two conference losses coming on the road will have chances to avenge those soon. First up is North Dakota State on Saturday and a chance to get a needed win as they try to get back to the top of the standings.

NDST2.) North Dakota State – 16-4 (7-1) – Last Week: 1
Games last week: W @ IUPUI, L @ Western Illinois
Games this week: @ South Dakota State

Disappointing week since the win at IUPUI was expected. Western Illinois loss was tough one to take as you wonder how this team would be doing with Taylor Braun. I’ll leave them ahead of Western Illinois for now, especially since that loss was on the road. Real big one again this Saturday.

WIU3.) Western Illinois – 15-4 (7-1) – Last Week: 2
Games last week: L vs. South Dakota State, W vs. North Dakota State
Games this week: @ Fort Wayne, @ Oakland

I just couldn’t move them any higher. I like the team but there are so many close games for this team (by two at South Dakota, by five at Kansas City, by four vs. IUPUI) for me to rate them higher right now. Five of the next six are on the road. If they are going to crack it’s the next few weeks.

SDAK4.) South Dakota – 8-12 (4-4) – Last Week: 5
Games last week: L @ Fort Wayne, W @ Oakland
Games this week: vs. Omaha

Downside is low for this team (only other team to lose to Fort Wayne is Omaha), but upside is clearly high (beat South Dakota State and Oakland so far along with a two point loss to Western Illinois). After tonight against Omaha they only have two more home games so that record could slide some.

OAK5.) Oakland – 8-13 (3-4) – Last Week: 4
Games last week: W vs. Kansas City, L vs. South Dakota
Games this week: vs. IUPUI, vs. Western Illinois

Two ways to look at Oakland… they came close against North Dakota State and South Dakota State and have been tested all year and usually performed decently… Or they are 3-4 in the Summit League with the only wins coming over Kansas City, IUPUI, and Omaha, two of those at home.

UMKC6.) Kansas City – 6-15 (3-5) – Last Week: 7
Games last week: L @ Oakland, W @ Fort Wayne, L vs. Houston Baptist
Games this week: vs. Omaha

I’ll let them slide ahead of Fort Wayne for now… have beaten both Fort Wayne and South Dakota on the road in the last two weeks. Has already hosted the top three teams at home so their remaining four home games are more winnable.

IPFW7.) Fort Wayne – 9-12 (2-5) – Last Week: 6
Games last week: W vs. South Dakota, L vs. Kansas City
Games this week: vs. Western Illinois, vs. IUPUI

Nice win over South Dakota to start the week but the loss to Kansas City is a bad one to take. Kansas City has beaten South Dakota as well, and that was in the Dakota Dome.

NEBO8.) Omaha – 5-16 (2-7) – Last Week: 8
Games last week: L @ Cal State Bakersfield
Games this week: @ South Dakota, @ Kansas City

Road loss was a good showing. Have chance to make some noise this week with close road trips. Nearly won at both places last year and did beat Kansas City in Omaha this year.

IUPUI9.) IUPUI – 6-16 (1-7) – Last Week: 9
Games last week: L vs. North Dakota State, L vs. South Dakota State
Games this week: @ Oakland, @ Fort Wayne

Nothing much to say here. Clearly last and likely to stay that way with two road games this week.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Only team to go 2-0 last week was South Dakota State. Nate Wolters went for 22 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals against Western Illinois and 12 points, six rebounds, seven assists and two steals vs. IUPUI.

Game of the ‘Next’ Week:
North Dakota State @ South Dakota State on Saturday night.

Women’s Power Rankings

SDST1.) South Dakota State – 14-6 (6-1) – Last Week: 1
Games last week: W vs. Western Illinois, L vs. IUPUI
Games this week: at Omaha

Disappointing home loss to IUPUI and the second straight weekend they’ve been pushed hard. For now they stay #1.

IUPUI2.) IUPUI – 10-8 (4-2) – Last Week: 2
Games last week: L @ North Dakota State, W @ South Dakota State
Games this week: vs. Kansas City, vs. South Dakota

Bad loss at North Dakota State for any conference title aspirations, but when you are the only team to beat South Dakota State so far there’s no reason to get bumped down.

SDAK3.) South Dakota – 9-10 (4-2) – Last Week: 4
Games last week: W vs. Fort Wayne, W vs. Oakland
Games this week: @ Western Illinois, @ IUPUI

Only team to go 2-0 last weekend against D1 competition. Neither opponent was great and they were both at home but the 4-2 record stands up for now. This weekend will give us a much better taste. The road trip to IUPUI and Western Illinois ate Omaha up a few weeks ago, can the Coyotes make their way through it?

WIU4.) Western Illinois – 10-8 (3-3) – Last Week: 5
Games last week: L @ South Dakota State, W @ North Dakota State
Games this week: vs. South Dakota, vs. Kansas City, @ Chicago State

Did what was expected last week losing at South Dakota State but getting a win over North Dakota State. Could have been a blowout and almost blew it but they did get the win away from home. Chance to get back home and get above .500 this week. Very up-and-down team.

NEBO5.) Omaha – 13-5 (3-3) – Last Week: 6
Games last week: W @ Chicago State, W @ Indiana Dabney
Games this week: vs. North Dakota State, vs. South Dakota State

Got the two easy non-conference wins so now it’s back to the conference slate. North Dakota State is a must win at home and then South Dakota State is probably house money. Would be a monumental upset. We’ll know much more about if Omaha is a contender for the top four after this weekend.

NDST6.) North Dakota State – 7-12 (3-4) – Last Week: 8
Games last week: W vs. IUPUI, L vs. Western Illinois
Games this week: @ Omaha

Got the solid win over IUPUI and have been close in every game the last few weeks. I think it’s an improving team but definitely middle of the pack.

IPFW7.) Fort Wayne – 6-13 (2-5) – Last Week: 3
Games last week: L @ South Dakota, L @ Kansas City
Games this week: vs. Oakland

Can’t live forever on one win and that’s kind of how I’ve been ranking Fort Wayne too long. That 31 point win over Western Illinois is impressive and they have been good at home barely losing to IUPUI and South Dakota State. The road games not as close… Need to beat Oakland this week.

OAK8.) Oakland – 8-11 (2-5) – Last Week: 7
Games last week: W @ Kansas City, L @ South Dakota
Games this week: @ Fort Wayne

Well the win over Kansas City is a welcome relief but they are still stuck at 2-5. Amazing that they beat IUPUI earlier in the year bug again like Fort Wayne you can’t live on that all year.

UMKC9.) Kansas City – 6-13 (2-4) – Last Week: 9
Games last week: L vs. Oakland, W vs. Fort Wayne
Games this week: @ IUPUI, @ Western Illinois

Kansas City had the nice win over Fort Wayne but that loss to Oakland beforehand was not a good start to the week. It’s an improving team and has a nice win over South Dakota. Could easily move out of this spot next week with some strong road performances.

Player of the ‘Last’ Week:
Eilise O’Connor had an outstanding week. 26 points and eight rebounds in the loss to Oakland (that was 56.5% of her team’s points) and 34 points and seven rebounds in the win vs. Fort Wayne (44% of her team’s points).

Game of the ‘Next’ Week:
IUPUI vs. South Dakota is a good one this week. Both teams might be 2nd best in the Summit.

Do you all agree with the rankings at all?  Think I’m way off on some teams? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
