Who Might the Summit League Face In… BRACKETBUSTERS!

Well we are just under two weeks away from the Bracketbuster announcements (January 28th.. might just be some of the games though). Time to start looking at who the Summit League teams might face.

For each team I’ve shown their projected RPI, their rank among the home/road teams in projected RPI and then the same for teams they might face. Remember that while the Bracketbusters are for marquee games that help determine who might get in the NCAA Tournament… that’s generally not anything relevant to most teams playing in them. Once you get outside the top top teams it’s just finding someone who’s a decent match, who is close by, and who you haven’t played yet this year (hopefully). I’ve bolded teams that are good fits.

Home Teams:
16th – Western Illinois – 132.2
    13th – Loyola Maryland – 124.5
    14th – Canisius – 136.6
    15th – Pacific – 139.2
    16th – Illinois St. – 140.8
    17th – Montana – 142
    18th – Albany – 142.3
    19th – Savannah St. – 142.9

Think the most likely matchup of this group, and the best one, is Illinois State. Western Illinois is terribly plagued by their bad RPI. If they improve it or the committee ignores that there are teams such as Eastern Kentucky, Detroit, and Evansville up higher.

25th – Oakland – 164.4
    22nd – Central Michigan – 163.2
    23rd – UC Irvine – 165.3
    24th – Idaho – 165.5
    25th – Cleveland State – 166.7
    26th – Bradley – 173.7
    27th – Wisconsin Green-Bay – 180

    28th – Cal St. Fullerton – 199.3

Oakland should just complete the cycle. Having played Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan this year Central Michigan would be a nice fit. As are the other three listed.

46th – Fort Wayne – 282.7
    43rd – St. Peter’s – 260.4
    44th – Kansas City – 264.5
    45th – Southeastern Louisiana – 267.2
    46th – Bowling Green – 272.7
    47th – Coastal Carolina – 273.5
    48th – SIU-Edwardsville – 283.6
    49th – Morgan St. – 285

Bowling Green and SIU-Edwardsville are both decent regional options. Bowling Green would be more likely due to reasons explained below…

49th – IUPUI – 289.3
    46th – Bowling Green – 272.7
    47th – Coastal Carolina – 273.5
    48th – SIU-Edwardsville – 283.6
    49th – Morgan St. – 285
    50th – Radford – 294.9
    51st – Nicholls St. – 296.1
    52nd – VMI – 301.3

Again Bowling Green and SIU-Edwardsville are both decent regional options, the problem is they’ve already played Bowling Green. Let’s give them SIU-Edwardsville as a likely opponent.

58th – Omaha – 319.9
    55th – Eastern Illinois – 313.9
    56th – Wisconsin Milwaukee – 316.6
    57th – Northern Colorado – 317.3

    58th – Austin Peay – 319.8
    59th – UC Riverside – 334.3
    60th – Longwood – 338
    61st – The Citadel

My guess is Northern Colorado. Easier to pair a team further east with another team that direction… Northern Colorado doesn’t have as many options nearby. Would also be a nice old NCC rematch.

Road Teams:
2nd – North Dakota State – 49.1
    1st – Belmont – 24
    2nd – Wichita State – 28.6
    3rd – Indiana St. – 60.8

    4th – St. Mary’s – 71.1
    5th – Akron – 73

Creighton is the top road team and since they can’t play Wichita State or Indiana State (MVC teams) I would put a lot of money on them drawing Belmont. This leaves the MVC teams for North Dakota State with Wichita State the likely opponent if both keep winning. This weekend could be big for NDSU in determining where they go.

7th – South Dakota State – 84.3
    4th – St. Mary’s – 71.1
    5th – Akron – 73
    6th – Utah St. – 84.7
    7th – Murray St. – 89.6
    8th – Valparaiso – 99.5
    9th – Tennessee St. – 103.3
    10th – Northern Iowa – 103.9

A few options here and South Dakota State may be strong enough to warrant a longer trip if necessary to draw a good matchup. Valparaiso and Northern Iowa are potential opponents fairly nearby and Akron, Murray St., and Tennessee St. aren’t much further.

34th – South Dakota – 230.5
    31st – NC Asheville – 185.6
    32nd – Cal Poly – 218.9
    33rd – Southeast Missouri State – 221.7
    34th – Campbell – 227.6
    35th – Buffalo – 237.7
    36th – Hawaii – 251.1
    37th – Winthrop – 253.3

South Dakota at Southeast Missouri State would be a great matchup when you notice the other teams around the two…

44th – Kansas City – 264.5
    41st – Western Carolina – 267.3
    42nd – Marist – 269.2
    43rd – Texas San Antonio – 271.9
    44th – Portland St. – 273.4
    45th – High Point – 278.5
    46th – Fort Wayne – 282.7
    47th – Texas A&M Corpus Christie – 288.3

Finally Kansas City sees a list of mostly east and west coast teams with a couple of Texas teams mixed in. Trip south would make a lot of sense for the Roos.
