Recapping the previous day’s games…

Men’s Basketball

Kansas City 66 vs. Utah Valley 78

Kansas City had a chance to pick up a win against a Utah Valley team that was 7-10 on the year, no pushover. The Roos were missing five players due to sickness and injury, so that made the chances even smaller. I’ll let UMKC’s media relations staff explain what happened next, “Getting his first career start at point guard for the ‘Roos was junior walk-on Aaron Washington, who had only practiced with the team eight times and played one minute of game-time ever at UMKC coming in. He performed admirably, logging 32 minutes, eight points and five assists.”

Fantastic effort by Washington, and freshman John Burke added 15 to lead the Roos. They shot 52% from the field, only lost the rebound count by two, and turned it over 14 times. So why did Kansas City still lose by 12? How about a Utah Valley team that went 17-22 from the field in the 2nd half and 3-4 from 3. That was too much for the Roos to overcome and they dropped this one 78-66 to fall to 4-13 (1-4) on the season. Utah Valley moved to 8-10 (0-1) with the win. Kansas City plays South Dakota in Vermillion on Saturday.

Western Illinois 95 vs. Greenville 48

Western Illinois never trailed grabbing a 15-1 lead before the first media timeout and leading 48-20 at the half en route to a 95-48 dominating win over Greenville College, a D3 college in Illinois. While the Panthers were clearly outmatched in this one it’s still a fun chance to marvel at some of the statistics Western Illinois put together. Michael Ochereobia went a brilliant 8-8 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds, nearly a double-double, for Western Illinois. Not to be outdone, Terell Parks went an incredible 11-11 from the field to lead the team with 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Western Illinois shot 60% in the 1st half and 58% in the 2nd half to go 59% for the game. Amazingly they left several points on the board as they went only 9-18 from the FT line. They outrebounded Greenville 43-24 and had 24 assists. Western Illinois got 59 points (62%) off the bench, quite impressive given the starters played only 44% of the minutes.

Adam Link, Junior Forward averaging 9.6 points and 3.6 rebounds, was injured in the first minute and played only three minutes in the game. Ceola Clark had a career high 12 assists. It’s sure nice to have games like this every once in a while isn’t it? Western Illinois moved to 13-3 (5-0) and travels to Omaha on Saturday. Greenville fell to 7-6 on the year. Some highlights are on Youtube here if that tickles your fancy.
