2012-13 Omaha Men’s Basketball – Game 4 Quick Reaction – Tulane

I should have a full recap up later today… probably early evening. This will have to do for now. Not a lot of positives out of this game. The turnover rate and defensive rebounding was every so slightly better, though some of that may have to do with level of competition.  The shooting was obviously horrid, and that happens every now and then. Rotation wise I think there were some interesting and promising developments.  So here we go…

In no particular order.

1) Easy conclusion from this game is… Omaha did not shoot well at all. 4-16 from 3 and 16-55 from the field. Their one saving grace was going 16-21 from the FT line which may have prevented them from losing by 30.
2) John Karhoff, Alex Welhouse, CJ Carter, and Justin Simmons combined to go 6-31. Oof.
3) Credit for Alex Phillips (4-9), Caleb Steffensmeier (2-3 from 3), and Matt Hagerbuamer (2-2) for their good shooting today.
4) Mavs did slightly better on the boards. Still gave up offensive rebounds on 33% of the chances, but that’s better than last game. Still a lot of work to do.
5) Individually Matt Hagerbaumer really helped Omaha on the boards. He grabbed three of Omaha’s nine offensive rebounds and ended up with seven of the 31 total rebounds. He had as many rebounds as the next two Mavericks combined. He also stayed out of foul trouble and didn’t turn the ball over in 17 minutes. Hopefully this is a sign of an increased role for him.
6) Mavericks did get nine assists on 16 made baskets, but hard to know if that shows good passing or just a limited number of makes.
7) Only 14 turnovers, a bit better than the last few games.
8) Koang Doluony only got 8 minutes… he did pick up three fouls so some of it might have had to do withthat but I think Matt Hagerbaumer has started to cut into his minutes some.
9) Simon Krych had his most extensive game to date and scored six points and grabbed three rebounds in 11 minutes. Not a bad outing for him.
10) Tulane shot much better than Omaha, 45% from the field and 33% from 3.
11) The pace was fairly moderate, 70 possesions.
12) The Mavericks gave up a double-double for the 2nd straight game as Josh Davis has 17 points and 11 rebounds.
