2011-12 UNO Women’s Basketball – Game 3 Preview – Upper Iowa

Filed under: College Sports,Omaha Mavericks — Jon Green @ 11:00 am

Upper Iowa will be the opponent Tuesday night as UNO returns home from Colorado ready to kick off their home schedule.

Upper Iowa

Upper Iowa is located in Fayette, Iowa, a town of 1300 in NE Iowa. Fayette is named after Marquis de la Fayette, a French American Revolution hero. Upper Iowa was established in 1857. Upper Iowa is a Division II school and a member of the NSIC. Upper Iowa’s athletic teams are known as the Peacocks. Upper Iowa’s Athletic Director is actually former UNO Athletic Director David Miller.

Upper Iowa hasn’t had a winning basketball season since 2001-2002, when they won a school record 19 games. They have only had 6 winning seasons in school history.

Upper Iowa has yet to play a regular season game, though they did play 3 exhibitions in which they lost to Drake and beat two lower division teams.

Upper Iowa will be starting an incredibly young and inexperienced team as they try to develop some players to lead the program upwards.

Expected Starters:
Forward – Ashlee Bailey – 6-0 Freshman – Indianapolis, Ind.
Forward – Jeri Jacobson – 5-9 Senior – Riverton, Wyo.
Center – Olivia Winkler – 6-2 Freshman – Castle Rock, Col.
Guard – Olivia Meier – 5-8 Freshman – Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Guard – Laura TerHark – 5-5 Freshman – Algona, Iowa

UNO is 2-0 all time against Upper Iowa, both of the games in the 2005-06 season.

Last time out UNO battled D2 #7 Metro State to the wire, but came up just short 64-61. Jamie Nash had a chance to win it for UNO with 2 second left, but her shot was off and Metro State added some FTs to reach the final margin. Jamie Nash led UNO with 22 points and Paige Frauendorfer backed her up with 19 points. Jamie also led UNO with 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Paige added 5 steals.

Expected Starters:
Forward – Heather Pohl – 6-0 Senior – Omaha, Neb. – Averaging 9.5 points and 5 rebounds. Shooting 45% from 3.
Forward – Stacia Gebers – 6-0 Sophomore – Nora, Neb. – Averaging 5 points and 5 rebounds.
Center – Zenta Liepa – 6-1 Junior – Riga, Latvia – Averaging 2.5 points and 3 rebounds.
Guard – Paige Frauendorfer – 6-0 Junior – Humphrey, Neb. – Averaging 21.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals.
Guard – Jamie Nash – 5-4 Junior – Verona, Missouri – Averaging 18 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals.

3 Things to watch:

1) Depth… PLEASE! – So far UNO has shown almost no depth. The non-starters have a combined 20 points through 2 games. And one starter has 5. 81% of UNO’s offense have come from 4 players, and 59% have come from Nash and Frauendorfer. This would be a great time for UNO to show some depth. It’s an easier opponent so some of the players who have struggled could use this chance to put up some good numbers and rebound from a rough start. They should at least get some added minutes.

2) Inside Prescense – UNO has gotten almost no production from it’s two centers, Zenta Liepa and Taijhe Kelly. I’m not totally convinced Liepa is going to start again this game, but we’ll see. Whoever starts, it’d be a great time for one of these two to start putting up some numbers. These two are the only players outside of the three starters (Gebers, Pohl and Frauendorfer) taller than 5-10. If UNO can’t get production out of these two… it’s going to be a long long year.

3) Attitude – Much like with the men last night, I’m intersted to see UNO’s attitude. If they can come out motivated, energized, and playing hard that should propel them to a good result. If they get that big lead, much like last night with the men, I’d love to see them keep the foot on the throttle and not let Upper Iowa back in it.

Prediction: I’ll take UNO in a blowout, 85-51.
