2011 UNO Women’s Basketball – Game 2 Preview – Metro State

Filed under: College Sports,Omaha Mavericks — Jon Green @ 6:50 pm

Things get a lot tougher tonight as the Mavericks face #7 Metro State, a D2 team from Denver. Metro State won their first game last night 77-67 over Northwest Nazarene.  Metro State was up 17 with 9:16 left, so the final is a bit deceiving.

Two senior guards led the way for Metro State and will be major impact players again tonight. Senior Jasmine Cervantes had 10 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds while Senior Alyssa Benson had 20 points on just ten shots. Benson did come off the bench, but her 25 minutes means we’ll see plenty of her and Cervantes in the backcourt together.

Metro State’s size won’t bother UNO (only one player over 6-0) but UNO will need to be strong to the glass to battle a team of guards that know they have responsibility to get boards (66% of Metro State’s boards were by guards). That shouldn’t be an issue for the Mavericks who usually see strong rebounding out of their guards as well.

Depth could be a factor as Metro State was able to play nine players for at least 14 minutes, and only one exceeded 27. UNO on the other hand only had six players play 14 minutes, including four starters with 28+ minutes played. Playing back-to-back days could hurt the Mavericks here.

Metro State had 20 points off of 19 Northwest Nazarene turnovers, something that should concern UNO should they decide to get sloppy. UNO only gave up 19 off their 27 on Friday, had it been a 1:1 ratio, the game would have been within 5 points.

So 3 things to watch:

1) Ball Control – LIMIT TURNOVERS! – If UNO turns it over 20 times, they won’t win this game.

2) Depth, where is it? – UNO only got 13 points and 9 rebounds off their bench. Depth will be an issue in this game and hopefully UNO can start to find some.

3) Guard Battle – It’s Paige Frauendorfer and Jamie Nash vs. Jasmine Cervantes and Alyssa Benson.  Both tandems went for big nights on Friday, who wins this matchup on Saturday?

I’d love to pick UNO again, but after some of the issues that I’m seeing with the result on Friday, I’m concerned. Metro State is an experienced team that will not let you off like Western State did. I think UNO probably plays even better than they did against Western State, but in the end…

Metro State wins 75-70.

I’ll be tweeting/live blogging about the game, so make sure to join me here (link to be posted soon) to talk about what’s going on!
