Can the Mavericks win the NCC?

Filed under: Omaha Mavericks — Jon Green @ 6:23 pm

The Mavs are done with the non conference portion of their schedule after defeating UNK, going to 15-1 on the year (1-0 in conference). So it’s time to start focusing on the NCC.  The question at hand, is can the Mavs win the NCC?

The big competition is South Dakota, ranked #3 in the polls last week (but who will drop after losing at Augastana).  I imagine USD will finish, at best, 9-3 (one loss already, if they lose at UNO, and then assuming one more game dropped).  So if the Mavs can go 9-3, they can tied USD for the title I think.

So let’s look at the schedule to see how they can do this.  First of all, the Mavs need to take care of the home court.  Home wins over USD and St. Cloud are musts.  These are the only other teams in the NCC currently ranked in the top 25.  If UNO can take care of business at home this year in their next 3 home games (UND, USD, St. Cloud), then the focus is on the road.  6 of their next 9 are on the road (the other 3 being the aforementioned home games).  If they can split the road games, (losing @ Auggie, USD, and St. Cloud), and get to 7-3 in conference when they finish the road stretch, they’d come home for 2 final games (2/28 and 3/1) vs. Duluth and Mankato.  Those games could be to lock up a share of the conference.  If they could steal one of the games on the road, it could even be for the conference title.

I didn’t think UNO had much of a shot at the NCC Title, but I’m starting to think they might.  They’ll have to beat the teams they are supposed to (which is never easy) and so they’ll likely drop one of those and need to pick up a win @ Auggie, USD or St. Cloud… but with how this team has played, proving everyone wrong, I think they can do it!
