Mavericks Tame Tigers

Tonight was the continuation of a rivalry. Nebraska Omaha and Doane. I’m not sure how much of a rivalry it is considering Doane plays in the NAIA. Oh well. I’m also getting tired of seeing NAIA teams. They aren’t on our level, let’s play some more D2 competition!

Anyways, UNO started off with a poor first half, building a 27-14 with lead with 8:18 to go, but losing that on a 12-1 Doane run until the 3:33 mark. They led 28-26 at that point. The offense just wasn’t totally clicking and the defense wasn’t either. Then at 2:58 Nate Owen hit a big 3, then 2 Denny Johnston FTs. I remember at that point my friend Vernon mentioned, 5 straight points. Next thing you know Tyler Peterson is throwing down a monster slam, 2 andrew bridger FTs and a Jerry Bennet dunk and the Mavericks finished the half on a 11-1 run to go in 39-27. At this point I took off running for my car and drove home to get my camera battery a little charge. To take this picture…Copy of DSCF0170

The Mavs started the 2nd half strong with a 5-0 run, to extend the lead to 17, thanks to a Justin Peterson jumper and a Michael Jenkins 3. After a quick Doane surge to cut the lead to 44-34, the Mavericks slammed the pedal to the floor and took off. A 17-3 run opened the lead up to 24, highlighted by dunks from Jerry Bennett and Justin Peterson. Peterson’s was praticular impressive dunking right over a Tiger. At this point the game was over and the teams just traded possesions the rest of the way, with UNO getting the final, 78-57.

Jerry Bennett led the Mavs with 16 points (8-12 shooting), 4 boards and 4 blocks in 29 minutes. Bennett played especially well in the 2nd half going 5-5 for 10 points and 3 blocks and 13 minutes. He really showed some range on his jumper tonight. Andrew Bridger, in his first game back from an ankle injury, was the key in the first half scoring all 10 of his points in 14 minutes. Denny Johnston led the Mavs in distribution with 6 assists and only 1 turnover. Michael Jenkins had another nice game with 11 points and 7 rebounds in 23 minutes.

The Mavs shot 50.9% for the game, including 56.5% in the 2nd half. Both halves featured 4-11 3pt shooting for 36.4%. Good FT shooting was big for the Mavs, shooting 16-20 for the game. The Tigers shot 36.1% for the game, 29.4% from 3, and only 61.5% (8-13) from the line. Jack Lind and Dane Cruz both struggled going a combined 6-21 from the floor

The #18 Mavs are now 12-1 on the season and are off until next Thursday when they play 12-3 Augastana to open the final season of NCC Basketball. The women (14-1 and winners of 9 straight) will take on 13-3 and #25 ranked Augastana at 6, with the men playing immediately after that game at 8. Tickets are $7 for Adults, $5 for Students and free with a UNO student ID.
